Patent Engineer at Johnson & Johnson
Qualifications and skills:
• Bachelors/Master’s Degree in Mechatronics/ Mechanical/Computer Engineering/ Biomedical
• Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights Management or Patent Agent Certification would be preferred
• 5 – 8 years of IP Analytics Experience including
• Ability to develop complex search strategies and taxonomies to search across various patent and scientific literature databases
• Prior Art Searching for Patentability Assessment, Freedom to Operate Analysis, Patent Validity
• Strategic IP Analytics including Technology Landscapes, White Space Analysis, Competitive Intelligence
• Good understanding of Patent Law – TRIPS agreement, Composition of US, EPO, India and China Patents, standards of patentability and differences between patent law of different jurisdictions
• Proficient in searching with various databases including Patbase, Derwent Innovation, Orbit, TotalPatent, STN, Espacenet and USPTO etc.
• Proficient in searching scientific literature databases like Science Direct, Scirus etc.
• Strong Technical & Academic Background – Should have ability to quickly grasp cutting edge technologies from multiple technology domains
• Familiarity with computer languages, algorithms, microprocessors, digital electronics and computer architectures preferred
Responsibilities:
• Work closely with the Local IP Managers, Liaisons, Attorneys, and Project Teams to develop a deep understanding of the projects/product and technology pipeline.
• Conduct Patent Studies such as landscape, “white space”, prior art, freedom to operate (FTO), and invalidity/validity searches at various NPD Stages.
• Design & Conduct Patent Mapping Studies to identify new areas & strategic directions for Ethicon. Convert the output from these studies into Actionable IP Insights.
• Proactively monitor competitor activities through patent literature and periodically assess and identify potential new competitors
• Generate weekly patent alerts in the technical areas of interest for monitoring new developments
• Assist patent attorneys for patent due diligence work
• Execute other critical IP projects – Technology Mapping
• Ensure highest level of confidentiality with respect to the IP deliverables & related communications.
