One of the biggest challenges iCog-ACC is facing right now is staffing issues. There are two reasons attributing to this problem.

1. Lack of talent and skills in the employment market.

People don’t have the soft skills needed to succeed in the work environment, and qualified applicants with the necessary knowledge can also be hard to come by.

2. Salary expectation

As of January 2022, the inflation rate in Ethiopia is around 34.5%. The cost of living is accelerating faster than in other countries.

Hence, the salary demands of qualified applicants will grow. iCog-ACC can not match the demands as it is a recently established company.

Despite these challenges, however, their team has grown tremendously, currently employing over 20 staff members.

Bethelhem, Zafree's co-founder, was honest, sharing how she was a novice in her sector and entrepreneurship.

“I was not a technical person and have never been in business.”

Bethelhem had to figure out everything in the startup world and that was anything but easy. She didn’t know where to go, who to talk to, and what exactly to ask.

Her adventure began with an infuriating experience she had seeing mismanaged waste in a marketplace. Then on, the urge to do something about it kept her unsettled.

But, the transition from passion to entrepreneurship was a long rough ride.

Bethelhem, however, persisted. Now 4 years in the making, Zafree is thriving towards its pan-African eco-business ambitions.

In Loline’s recent series of featuring local startups, we interviewed Mogzit’s founder Samrawit Tarekegn.

We asked Samrawit about the challenges she faced in forming the startup Mogzit.

"My first challenge was self-doubt. I had a big dream, and I kept asking myself if I really could do it. Putting an end to your employee journey and starting your own company is very difficult."

"And you can't go down the path you want if your co-founders don't match your passion. So, building a responsible and dedicated team was also a big challenge." She admits.

Zafree Papers: A 100% tree-free paper manufacturing company

Zafree was not even Zafree when it all began.

It didn’t have the cool name it does now. It didn’t have the large-scale manufacturing plant it does and it didn’t set out to revolutionize the paper industry either.

Zafree was born out of a passion for a healthier environment. It formed into the now pulp-free paper producer through a long process of learning what works and what doesn't.

It started as a little waste management project that turned into plastic recycling and moved on to paper recycling then pivoted to pulp production.

Zafree is a portrait of how big things have small beginnings.

A young woman’s ambition for effective waste management is now becoming a sizable pulp manufacturing company. It has already partnered with a few African countries and is thriving for pan-African success.

EPhone: A Modern-day Phone App

* Surprise at the end

EPhone is an all-in-one dialer and SMS application that was launched in 2019.

Apart from dialing and SMS services, EPhone provides automated USSD procedures which relieve you of the tedious process of manually writing USSD codes.

In our interview with EPhone's CEO, Nohe Fekede, he told us about his company's mission. Nohe described EPhone's mission as "building a modern-day Phone app"

Dialer applications are often used for Phone and SMS services. Nowadays, however, telecommunication services are far more diverse than they used to be.

A modern-day phone app, Nohe says, can manage the current and future diversification of telecom services.

EPhone currently has more than 180 thousand downloads, of which 42% are monthly active users.

Sure, the month of March has passed, and we’re still talking about Women Empowerment. And we should!

Here's another snippet from our interview with Samrawit Moges.

Samrawit didn’t hire women out of pity. She knew a determined woman can achieve tremendous things.

If she managed to do so, she believed, others could too.

Samrawit chose to work with women because she saw they are a weave of multi-tasking, meticulousness, and taking responsibility.

But it was never easy as society mistook their professions. Women had such hard times doing their jobs but that never stopped Samrawit.

She goes above and beyond to provide opportunities for people. Samrawit has always been about empowering women and all who work with her.

‘It makes me content to see them grow, go out, and start their own companies,’ Samrawit asserts.

Samrawit shared with us the hurdles she had to overcome both as a woman and an entrepreneur.
