What would you do if the business you just started suffered a tragedy that cost a life?

It was on the 16th day after Samrawit got her business license. She had set up a tour to DireDawa for one of her first clients, a family of three. Everyone was having a great time.

Then it happened. As the family was out to see hyenas, a bomb was thrown at them, killing the tour guide on the spot.

It shook Samrawit and everyone to the core. People told her this was a sign and that it was not going to work out anyway.

Samrawit took the blow and the pain but decided to hold on. Having successfully run the business for around three decades, it is now obvious who was right about the hard times.

"Had it been for all the scary things that happened, I could have been trapped."

...

That's not all. Samrawit was kind enough to take a chunk of her time to tell us more about fighting one’s way through.

In this month's edition dedicated to women, we picked on a brave businesswoman who went against all societal stereotypes.

This was about 30 years ago. The communist era in Ethiopia just came to an end and private ownership was a novel concept. Starting a business in such uncertain times leaving a secure government job sounded ridiculous to many.

She had just begun a family and her children were little. She couldn't have picked a worse time for an entrepreneurial adventure. Against all odds, she became one of the pioneers in the tourism sector and thrived as a business icon.

Stay tuned for this month's edition which is right around the corner.
