इस मंदिर को दुष्टों का संहार करने वाले भगवान शिव को समर्पित है। यह मंदिर महानता के प्रति एक श्रद्धांजलि है। इसके बावजूद हमारी शैक्षिक प्रणाली ने इतिहास के पाठ्यक्रम में इसे उचित स्थान नहीं दिया। यह अपने आस-पास की संरचनाओं के साथ सही अनुपात और संरेखण (Alignment) में तराशा गया था।

This mandir has two Garbhagrahas. One Garbhagraha has a standing murti of Bhoo Varaha Swami.
This murti was installed by Vijayaditya III in 1186-87.
The five feet tall murti is depicted carrying Bhoodevi in his mouth.

It is one of the most famous Shiva temples in South India, and is said to be the site where Kannappa was ready to offer both his eyes to cover blood flowing from the Siva linga before the Siva stopped him and granted him moksha.
