Founded the "House of Joy" school in 1423 at the court of Gianfrancesco I Gonzaga, ruler of Mantua.

Classical philology and mathematics were taught here with the aid of visual aids and practical work.

The school was also a good place for physical education: the pupils practised horse riding, gymnastics, swimming and fencing.

In 1863 E. M. Singer & Co. was closed by mutual consent and the business continued as Singer Manufacturing Company, allowing the financial and managerial functions to be reorganised.

I was no longer actively involved in the day-to-day running of the firm, but served as a member of the Board of Trustees and was one of the major shareholders.

I'm a Scottish merchant and yachtsman and creator of the Lipton tea brand.

I organised a football tournament in Turin in 1909 which was later called 'The First World Cup'.

The Italians, Germans and Swiss sent their strongest professional clubs to the tournament, but the English Football Association responded to an offer to do the same.

Realising that the tournament could not be considered serious without the involvement of the British football ancestors, I invited an amateur football club from the north east of England called West Auckland FC to take part in the tournament.

Most of the squad was made up of coal mine workers, but West Auckland won the tournament with professionals from the continent.

The English returned to Italy in 1911 to defend the title they had won two years earlier and won the tournament again, defeating Juventus 6:1 in the final.

Helen Walton and I gave financial support to educational, religious and community organisations. We funded the construction of zoos, libraries and sports facilities.

I died on April 5, 1992, of myeloma disease. Forbes magazine estimated my fortune in 1992 at $58.6 billion.

After my death, my Hoam estate was opened to the public and guided tours.

My collection of Korean art is considered to be one of the largest and richest private collections in the country, and a number of items in it are recognised as "national treasures" by the government.

"Hoam" is close to the Everland theme park, the most popular in the Republic of Korea and owned by the Samsung Group.
