I'm an English statesman, politician and military man.

At the outbreak of the English Civil War I captained a detachment of sixty volunteer cavalrymen, presumably formed at my own expense and distinguished myself at the battle of Edgehill, lost by the supporters of Parliament on 23 October 1642.

This troop was later transformed into the famous "Ironsides Cavalry", which in turn formed the basis of my 'New Army'.

I'm a British microbiologist.

I was named one of the 100 most important people of the 20th century by "Time" magazine in 1999 for my discovery of penicillin and reported:

This discovery will change the course of history. The substance that Fleming called penicillin is a highly active anti-infective agent.

Once the compound's capabilities were appreciated, penicillin became an integral part of any treatment for bacterial infections.

By the middle of the century, the substance I'd discovered had become widely incorporated into the production of pharmaceuticals, my artificial synthesis began, which helped to cope with most of the ancient diseases, such as syphilis, gangrene and tuberculosis.

I ordered the execution, in 1896, of the surrendered Matabele African rebel chief, Uwini, to whom I'd promised to spare his life in the event of surrender.

I'm a British naval seaman and explorer traveller.

I've led three circumnavigation expeditions to explore the world's oceans.

During these expeditions I made a number of geographical discoveries. I've explored and mapped parts of Newfoundland and the east coast of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the west coast of North America, and the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans that were little known and rarely visited before me.

Because of the attention I paid to cartography, many of the maps I produced were unparalleled in their accuracy and precision for many decades and served seafarers until the second half of the nineteenth century.

I'm an Anglo-Irish explorer.

I gained my first experience of polar exploration on the Discovery Expedition, participating in the first voyage to the South Pole, after which I was evacuated for health reasons.

I led my own expedition, the Nimrod, in 1907, during which I reached 88° 23' S. short of reaching the South Pole, 97 geographic miles (180 km) short of the South Pole.

I was knighted by King Edward VII for my achievements.

I'm an English mathematician, logician, cryptographer.

During the Second World War I worked at the Government Code and Cypher School, based at Bletchley Park, where the work focused on breaking Axis ciphers and codes.

I headed the Hut 8 group responsible for cryptanalysis of German naval communications.

I developed a number of hacking techniques, including the theoretical basis for the Bombe, the machine used to break the German Enigma cipher.

I'm an English experimental physicist and chemist.

I'm the founder of the doctrine of the electromagnetic field, which was then mathematically formalized and developed by Maxwell.

My main contribution to the physics of electromagnetic phenomena was to reject Newton's principle of long-range action and to introduce the concept of a physical field — a continuous region of space entirely filled with lines of force and interacting with matter.

I settled in 1890 in Paris, in Montmartre, and I loved the neighbourhood all my life.

I met Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Gauguin and the Catalan artists Santiago Rusiñol, Ramón Casas and Miguel Utrillo there.

I participated in joint exhibitions with them.
