2021-12-16 09:27:48 A little sick, you decide to go to the nearest hospital to get an Enema. A simple procedure. You call your mom and tell her you will call her when you are done. Perhaps you even tell her you are excited to have dinner with her that night.

During your drive to the hospital, you pause to reflect on the past 7 years, the stressful, tiring, agonizing 7 years you've spent in medical school. But you've just graduated exactly 32 days ago. You made it. You survived medical school. Now you are a doctor filled with hope to help others.

You think of how your mom was excited when you graduated. That makes you feel energized, and you even forget you are sick for a moment. 'I am a doctor. I am a doctor,' you repeat the words in awe.

You arrive at the hospital feeling better than you did earlier.

But then that’s it. That’s all you remember.

You are now lying lifeless in your mother's hands. She cries out your name in pain. She is grieving the loss of a daughter. Your body is bruised.

You’re dead. Your hopes and dreams are gone.

Tragic isn’t it?

This is the TRUE STORY of Doctor Hiwot.

5 years ago, Dr Hiwot, 24, went into a hospital for a simple procedure. After a few hours, her lifeless naked body wrapped in nothing but a sheet was given to her mother.

In her body autopsy, internal bleeding could be seen in her head. There was also bruising throughout her body which showed signs of sexual assault.

Yet, no one has been held accountable for her death. Justice has not been served.

Let's tell her story, speak of her pain, and make those responsible accountable for their actions. Maybe lessen her mother’s pain just a little.

We're back with our weekly mental health awareness posts. Today we'll be talking about schizotypal personality disorder.
People with schizotypal personality disorder have odd behavior, speech patterns, thoughts, and perceptions. Other people often describe them as strange or eccentric. People who have this disorder may also: Dress, speak, or act in an odd or unusual way. Be suspicious and paranoid. Schizotypal personality disorder can easily be confused with schizophrenia, a severe mental illness in which people lose contact with reality (psychosis). While people with schizotypal personality disorder may experience brief psychotic episodes with delusions or hallucinations, the episodes are not as frequent, prolonged or intense as in schizophrenia.Another key distinction is that people with schizotypal personality disorder usually can be made aware of the difference between their distorted ideas and reality. Those with schizophrenia generally can't be swayed away from their delusions.
Despite the differences, people with schizotypal personality disorder can benefit from treatments similar to those used for schizophrenia. People with schizotypal personality disorder are at an increased risk of: Depression, anxiety, other personality disorders, schizophrenia, temporary psychotic episodes, usually in response to stress, problems with alcohol or drugs, suicide attempts, work, school, relationship and social problems.

As a society we have the opportunity to examine our behaviours and beliefs for biases that permit violence to continue. Think about how you define masculinity and femininity, and how your own biases and stereotypes influence you. From the attitudes we have about gender violence to the policies we support in our communities, we can all take action to stand against gender violence. Rather than listening for a “no,” make sure there is an active “yes,” from all involved. Adopt enthusiastic consent in your life and talk about it. Phrases like “she was asking for it” or “boys will be boys” attempt to blur the lines around sexual consent, placing blame on victims, and excusing perpetrators from the crimes they have committed. While those that use these lines may have fuzzy understandings of consent, the definition is crystal clear. When it comes to consent, there are no blurred lines
The examples we set for the younger generation shape the way they think about gender, respect and human rights. Start conversations about gender roles early on, and challenge the traditional features and characteristics assigned to men and women. Survivors of violence are speaking out more than ever before, and everyone has a role to play to ensure they can have justice.
Don’t say, “Why didn’t she leave?”
Do say: “We hear you. We believe you. We stand with you.”
When a woman shares her story of violence, she takes the first step to breaking the cycle of abuse. It’s on all of us to give her the safe space she needs to speak up and be heard.
