When writing formally, consider the following levels of quality:
1. The meaning can be followed while reading the sentence.
2. The meaning becomes apparent once the sentence is completely read.
3. The meaning becomes apparent once the sentence is completely read and deciphered (eg. by re-reading parts of it and piecing together what the writer was trying to convey)
4. The meaning
never becomes apparent.
1 is obviously the ideal and what you should always be aiming for.
2 is perfectly acceptable, but not ideal.
3 is acceptable, but always try to avoid it because frankly it makes you look like a bad writer.
4 is total failure.
