NIKE's "Consumer Direct Acceleration Strategy" paying offNike Inc (NKE) announced that Q3FY23 earnings beat market expectations, but the retailer has been challenged with a surplus of inventory and soft sales in China.
Nike reported revenue for the third quarter was US$12.4 billion, up 14%. Net profit was US$1.2 billion, down 11% compared to the prior year. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) was US$0.79 per share, decreasing 9%, beating analysts' expectations of US$0.543 per share.
Nike brand revenue increased by 19% year-on-year to US$11.8 billion. Converse's revenue increased by 12% year-on-year to US$612 million.
In terms of regions, sales in North America surged 27%, while China sales increased 1%, down 4% compared to the same period last year. Sales in China have been soft as consumers contended with sweeping lockdowns and rising infections. Analysts expect some activity has begun to pick up, and consumers aren't back to pre-pandemic shopping levels yet.
Nike launch ceremony of Nike in Zero Carbon Smart Logistic Center, a project expected to have the largest sing-unit storage capacity in Asia – in Taicang, Jiangsu province. The center, covering Nike's entire product distribution in the Asia market, is supported by smart technologies and is wholly powered by renewable energy.
Moving forward, Nike expects flat to low single-digit revenue growth and taking a "cautious approach" to planning, given uncertainty about consumer confidence and the economy. Nike CEO John Donahoe said the company feels good about its momentum in China and saw growth "really pick up" in the second month of the quarter after lockdowns ended.
