China wants to improve the economy
Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced an ambitious 2024 economic growth target of around 5% on Tuesday, promising steps to transform the country's development model and defuse risks fuelled by bankrupt property developers and indebted cities.
"It's harder to reach 5% this year because the benchmark has become higher, indicating that senior executives are committed to supporting economic growth," said Tao Chuan, chief macro analyst at Soochow Securities.
Last year's uneven growth exposed deep structural imbalances in China, from weak household consumption to increasingly low returns on investment, prompting calls for a new growth model. China began the year with a stock market crash and deflation at levels not seen since the 2008-09 global financial crisis.
Li acknowledged that achieving the target "will not be easy," adding that a "proactive" fiscal stance and "prudent" monetary policy are needed.

The Biden administration requesting the Supreme Court prevent Texas from adhering to the SB4 law SB4 is one of the most expansive immigration laws, which authorizes law enforcement officials to imprison and prosecute migrants on criminal charges of illegal entry or return. It also allows state judges to issue deportation orders against suspected lawbreakers.
Last week, U.S. District Court Judge David Ezra accepted a request from the Justice Department and the American Civil Liberties Union and temporarily enjoined Texas state officials from enforcing SB4. He ruled that immigration arrests and deportations are federal responsibilities, and rejected Texas' argument that the state was facing an "invasion" of migrants.
The Biden administration, said SB4 interferes with federal immigration authorities, ignores U.S. law on granting asylum and threatens international relations with the Mexican government.
The legal battle over SB4 is one of many confrontations between Texas and President Biden over immigration policy.

An Air Force officer has been detained in the United States for passing classified information to a "Ukrainian woman" with whom he had been communicating through a dating website The secret information concerned the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, and David Slater, the name of the accused, had access to it because he worked in the strategic command of the armed forces of the United States. He attended briefings where the conflict in eastern Ukraine was discussed, and afterwards passed this data to a "Ukrainian" through an online dating service, according to the website of the US Department of Justice.
In this case, Slater's wife with enviable regularity asked to provide her with classified information, and in personal messages without hesitation called him a "secret informant" or "secret agent". Slater faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000.
