2022-11-08 08:59:16 Grammar Question

Today a student asked me the difference between
"I have a few books"
"I have few books"

It was interesting because they mean the opposite.

A few means a couple/some
"I have a few books"

They have some books at home and they are saying they are quite happy about how many they have :)
It is also used in English when you don't want to sound egotistical - "I have a few cars, not that many but just a few"

Few means they don't have many

"I have few books"

They don't have many books and they think they have less than they should.

Remember it can only be used with things you can count
books, dreams, restaurants
sugar, love, rice, anger

What do you think?
Did you know this?

Do you have a few books in your house?

What do you think you have few of?

Grammar revision
(Upper-Intermediate)

Story:

Here is Chris, he was a banker at a very big company. He had a fantastic life and received a high salary. Sadly, he was also a thief and stole a lot of money from his clients. The police caught him and put him in prison.

How do you think his life has changed?

Ex.
1. He used to eat at the best restaurants, now he eats rubbish.
2. He is getting used to sleeping only 3 hours a night - the other prisoners keep him awake
3. He is used to drinking moonshine (самогон) with his cell mates

Write in the comments some more sentences about Chris' new life using the grammar
- used to do
- is getting used to doing
- is used to doing

2022-11-06 17:39:46 British and Irish Culture

So my surname is McGuckin and although it can be very difficult to pronounce there are many people who share the "Mc" or "Mac" prefix. The most well-known are McDonalds, MacGregor, McCartney, McQueen.

So I thought about sharing with you guys some information on this common name.

So, what do all the Mc and Mac mean?
Mc and Mac are prefixes to surnames to mean “son of”. So there must have been a Donald, and his son created the burgers.

What comes after Mc and Mac?
The letter after the Mac and Mc is capitalised because it is a proper noun.

Where do they use these surname prefixes?
Both in Ireland and Scotland

Is there a difference between Mc and Mac?
There isn’t really a difference apart from Mc is more commonly used in Ireland and Mac more commonly used in Scotland

Any other random facts?
There used to be a prefix Nc which meant “daughter of” that was used until the 18th century until it started to disappear.

Does your first name or surname mean anything?

Used to, Get used to +ing, Be used to +ing

When we talk about how we routinely did things in the past which we don't do now we use
"used to +infinitive"

I used to live in Spain
(but now I don't)

What about something that we routinely do now that we didn't do in the past?

I didn't use to see so much snow
(before I didn't but now I do)

——————————————————-

When we want to talk about something new which we are doing in our life which is difficult or strange...but we are trying to feel comfortable with, we use:

"Be getting used to +ING"

In Russian: когда мы хотим сказать о чем-то, что для нас делать трудно или необычно, но мы пытаемся это делать и пытаемся к этому привыкнуть, мы используем "Be getting used to +ING (глагол с окончанием -ing, как thinking, doing и так далее)"

I am getting used to walking in -30 degree weather
(it was strange/difficult at the beginning but now it is a little easier)

—————————————————————

When something was new in our life and we felt it was difficult or strange... And now it is OK and normal we use:
"Be used to +ING"

I am used to eating delicious new fruits and food
(it was strange/difficult but now it isn't)

What about something which is Still strange!

I am still not used to speaking Russian with my new family
(It was difficult and still is difficult)

Answer the questions below

How has your life changed from a couple of years ago?

Is there anything new that you didn't use to do?

What has been a difficult change to get used to?
