2022-06-24 19:02:37 US Supreme Court Overturns Landmark Abortion Decision

The US Supreme Court has overturned Roe v Wade, removing federal abortion protections and placing the responsibility for legalizing or banning the procedure upon individual states, in a decision handed down Friday.

“The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. We now overrule those decisions and return that authority to the people and their elected representatives,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the opinion.

The controversial decision stemmed from a Mississippi case, Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which centered on the constitutionality of a state law banning abortions after the first 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett sided with Alito in the majority opinion.

The European Council’s decision to grant Ukraine candidate status to the bloc has been hailed as a “unique and historic” moment by President Vladimir Zelensky, despite Belgian PM Alexander De Croo insisting Kiev is still “many years” from actual membership.

“This does not mean that Ukraine will soon be part of the European Union. It is a process of many years with a lot of reforms which will be very difficult,” De Croo said ahead of the EC Summit.

Natalia Forsyuk, Director General of Ukraine’s Government Office for Coordination of European and Euro-Atlantic Integration insisted Ukraine will only be able to join the EU in 2029 at the earliest due to the “huge amount of legislation that needs to be adopted and implemented”.
