A powerful double whammy of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun has slammed into Earth – triggering an extraordinary solar storm that painted skies red and green with auroras.

The Sun erupted billions of tons of plasma and magnetic field Tuesday – the resulting CME overtook and “swallowed” at least one other previous CME before crashing to Earth – a phenomenon known as a ‘Cannibal’ CME. (US Space Weather Prediction Center)

The resulting impact generated aurora effects in the Arctic Circle and beyond – the intense red hue is rare and associated with stronger solar activity at mid-latitudes.

Space weather forecasters in the US have issued a further solar storm warning for Thursday that may cause havoc with satellites and radios across the country.

Britain's medicines regulator is the first to give the go-ahead for the anti-viral Covid-19 pill, hailed as a drug to combat infection and prevent hospitalizations.

Molnupiravir is an oral treatment which has already seen a surge of orders by govts despite no prior approval. The US is still evaluating Merck's drug.

The UK has purchased almost half a million courses, while the US has ordered 1.7MN courses at a total cost of $1.2MN - effectively $700 per course.

Merck expects to make $7BN in global revenue by the end 2022.

The mandate applies to businesses with 100 or more employees – about 84mn people officials said. Employers will need to show all workers are fully vaccinated by Jan 4 or adopt policies that allow unvaxxed workers to submit to weekly testing and mask-wearing.

Penalties for non-compliance can range from $13,653 per serious violation to $136,532 if a company wilfully violates the rules.

The regulation is likely to be challenged in court, but a Biden admin. official said on a press call Thursday that the rule will OVERRIDE any state policy.

UK NHS workers will not be forced to have a Covid jab this winter under plans being considered by ministers, despite warnings that rising cases could see the public put under greater restrictions.

Earlier this year, the UK Govt. considered making vaccines mandatory for NHS staff, saying the move would protect patients and doctors but appear to have climbed down from the notion.

Such rules have already been introduced for care homes and will come into force next week – with over 60,000 workers (10%) still not fully jabbed ahead of the deadline and could face dismissal.

Now it appears any mandate will be delayed until April in 2022.

Researchers tracked deforestation and mining activity from 2017-2020, using an algorithm to detect land-use changes.

The findings, if true, could mean that Kim Jong Un is already happy with the current proliferation levels OR that bottlenecks exist further down the development line. "It's using 1/10th or 1/20th of capacity," a research fellow at Stanford said. " The question is why."

Indians across the country have begun celebrating Diwali despite fears over coronavirus and rising air pollution. Last year a spike in Covid-19 cut short the festivities but huge numbers have turned out in 2021, ignoring govt pleas to avoid large gatherings.

Crowds were seen lighting oil candles, and buzzing around markets to buy flowers and lanterns - 900,000 were set free into the sky above the northern city of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh state.

Spectacular images set the scenes along the Saryu River with thousands of visitors not exactly caring about social distancing.

They did keep the Guinness World Record for lamps lit though, so.... there's that!
