August 23, 1943 - Day of Defeat of Nazi Germany in Battle of Kursk
It was one of the decisive battles of the Second World War.
Hitler's command planned in 1943 to conduct a major summer offensive, seize the strategic initiative and turn the tide of war in their favor. To the beginning of Kursk battle Headquarters of the Supreme High Command created the grouping (the Central and Voronezh fronts) which had 1,336 thousand people, more than 19,000 mounts and mortars, 3,444 tanks and self-propelled artillery mounts, 2,172 airplanes. Grouping of the enemy "Center" and "South" had over 900 thousand persons, about 10,000 mounts and mortars, up to 2,700 tanks and assault guns, about 2,050 airplanes.
By stubborn and firm defence of the Soviet armies the enemy was exhausted and exsanguinated. As a result of counterattack the groups of the enemy in Oryol and Belgorod-Kharkov direction were defeated.
On August 23, Kharkov was liberated. In the battle of Kursk the Wehrmacht lost about
500,000 persons,
1,500 tanks, over
1,700 thousand airplanes,
3,000 guns.
Victory in the battle of Kursk was one of the important stages of achievement of the general victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany.
Germany and its allies were forced to turn to defence in all theatres of World War II.
