2021-04-28 08:54:05 Copywriting skills

A while ago I shared a video about what skills a content writer needs, you can check it out here:

Content writers and copywriters are two different roles. Here are a few differences between them:

1. Copywriters are needed to sell products or services.
2. Content writers are needed to develop leads.
3. Copywriters write copy for sales pages, landing pages, emails, and ads.
4. Content writers write content for blogs, ebooks, white papers, and case studies.
5. The goal of copy is to persuade people to take action.
6. The goal of content is to educate, entertain, inspire or inform.

Copywriters need a slightly different skill set than content writers.

Watch my new video to find out what skills a copywriter needs to succeed in marketing:

2021-04-21 09:00:26 Copywriter vs Content Writer vs Technical Writer vs 6 More Jobs!

So you want to hire a copywriter? Before you start looking for candidates, let me ask you this: Are you sure you need a copywriter, and not a content writer? Or a technical writer? Or a content strategist? Or a content creator? Or a UX writer? (Well, I guess you don’t have any doubts regarding UX writers, there's been a lot of buzz about them lately).

Anyway, there are many jobs in content marketing, and if you’re looking for a person to do the writing, this person isn’t necessarily a copywriter.

Check out my brand new video about the difference between copywriters and 8 other jobs involved in marketing and writing.

2021-04-14 09:36:52 Search intent

I won't be exaggerating if I say, the reason why so much content underperforms on Google is because there is a mismatch between your target keyword and the search intent.

Very often when writers write blog posts, they don’t check the top search results on Google for the keyword they want their content to rank for. And then, they publish content which is irrelevant to people’s searches.

To write content that ranks well, you need to have a crystal clear understanding of what your readers want to see when they type in your target keyword in the search box.

Watch my new video to learn:

- The types of search intents
- How to define a search intent for your target keyword
- How to define the type of content you need to write and the topics to include there
- How to pick out the right search term to target with your content

2021-04-07 09:00:44 Jobs To Be Done

Do you know what “job” people hire your content for? That’s right, people hire your content, the same way they hire products, services or people.

In marketing, we tend to overcomplicate things. We give priority to demographics, interests, job titles and the sizes of revenue to understand the audience we’re marketing to.

But have you ever wondered what to do with all that information you’ve gathered browsing people’s Twitter feeds? I bet you have. The truth about marketing personas is this: they are useless. Most of the time.

What we should be doing instead is trying to understand what motivates people to look for a solution in their current circumstances. Or figuring out our audience’s jobs to be done.

2021-03-31 10:02:23 B2B buyer’s journey

If you work in B2B, you know that generating B2B leads isn’t easy. The thing is, B2B buyers are pretty hard to attract, let alone convert.

Every other blog post on B2B content marketing tells you this:

You need to become a thought leader because everybody wants thought leadership content.

I don’t know about everybody, but I’m pretty sure thought leadership content isn’t something B2B buyers want. What they want is to buy. But marketers won’t help them do it.

Check out my new video where I talk about B2B buyer’s journey and how to apply it to your content to let B2B buyers successfully arrive at a purchase.
