Do you have commercial or general aviation flying over your home or near your home? Would you like to know more about these airplanes: identity, heading, speed, altitude and maybe GPS data along with even more information? Well then [Rich Osgood] has just the project for you and it’s not that expensive to set up. [Rick] demonstrates using a cheap USB dongle European TV tuner style SDR (software defined radio) tuner that you can get for under $30 to listen in on the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) 1090 MHz mode “S” or 978 MHz mode “UAT” signals being regularly transmitted from these aircraft.https://hackaday.com/2014/01/16/build-a-cheap-airplane-ads-b-radio-receiving-tracking-station/

For those who are interested in checking out which aircraft made contrails (yes, that’s what I say they are...) overhead and WHEN, check out how to make your home grown ADSB recorder from a spare laptop or desktop which has a Software Defined Radio (SDR) dongle and antenna.
What I say is, put your money where your mouth is, learn some basic meteorology, and you too can predict when your tinfoil friends are going to freak out days in advance (weather predictions - contrails which will blow funny patterns)...
