Russia industry surprises with small drop as economy adapts

Russia's industrial sector recorded its smallest contraction in four months, the latest sign of the economy adapting to the sweeping sanctions imposed by the U.S. and allies for the invasion of Ukraine.

Industrial production fell 0.5% in July, less than the 2.3% decline analysts expected, and the best reading since the first months of the war. Industrial production was up 1.2% from the previous month.

Even the auto sector, which has been virtually shut down in recent months due to the flight of foreign companies that have dominated it, has shown some tentative signs of stabilization, with output down only 58% in July compared to -66% in May.

Analysts also expect economic trends to worsen in late 2022 and early 2023, especially amid the European Union's oil embargo, Bloomberg.

T. Rowe cuts Stripe, Instacart valuations after tech selloff

T. Rowe Price Group Inc. slashed its valuations for payments firm Stripe and other closely held companies as a recent swoon in tech stocks continues to ripple through private markets.

The T. Rowe Price Global Technology Fund cut Stripe to $23.04 a share as of June 30, a 64% reduction from the end of last year, according to a regulatory filing Monday and data compiled by Bloomberg. The $4 billion fund also cut its valuation for grocery delivery service Instacart.

Large money managers are writing down stakes in tech firms in the mutual funds they oversee. Fidelity Investments, for example, had cut Stripe’s valuation to $32.05 a share earlier this year.

The T. Rowe tech fund marked down Instacart by 40% to less than $72 as of mid-year, the filing and data compiled by Bloomberg show.

The reductions followed a sharp decline in the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index, which tumbled 30% in the first half of the year, Bloomberg.

IKEA has no plans to sell all business in Russia and wants to return "within a year or two"

Informants reported that retailer is considering a return to Russia "within a year or two, after economic environment changes and sanctions pressure eases."

Until then, the stores will be closed or possibly leased.
