Swedish airline claims world-first 100% sustainable fuel flight

Sweden’s Braathens Regional Airlines said it operated what it understands to be the first flight of a commercial aircraft powered entirely by sustainable aviation fuel.

The carrier performed the test flight from Malmo to Bromma, near Stockholm, using a plane from manufacturer ATR, in collaboration with SAF maker Neste Oyj, the companies said in a statement Tuesday.

Sustainable fuel is seen as the most realistic route to decarbonizing aviation as technologies including electric and hydrogen airliners remain years away. ATR and Braathens are working on certifying a 100% SAF-powered aircraft by 2025.

When used in neat form Neste SAF reduces greenhouse gas emissions over its lifecycle by up to 80% compared with kerosene, Bloomberg.

China’s electric car exports more than double, mostly to Europe

Car manufacturers in China shipped $1.2 billion worth of electric passenger vehicles, up 122% from a year earlier and almost triple the level in April. Passenger cars worth $2.8 billion were exported, the fourth-highest monthly total in the past few years.

Amid falling domestic sales in 11 of the past 12 months, Chinese car companies have boosted sales abroad, with exports in the first five months of this year alone exceeding the entire 2020 volume. The biggest market is Europe, which took nearly half of shipments in May and about three-quarters of electric car exports, with much of the rest going to Asia.

Analysts believe that China's existing overcapacity for electric vehicle production and low domestic sales mean that China will remain largely an exporter in the medium term. China accounted for nearly 60% of global electric car exports in 2021, and the trend will continue in 2022, Bloomberg.

Tether plans to conduct a full audit of its reserves

Tether Chief Technology Officer Paolo Ardoino said Monday that Tether (USDT) plans to conduct a full audit of its reserves in order to assure the community that the stablecoin is properly secured. Tether reserves are validated quarterly by accounting firm MHA.

Currently, accounting company MHA provides quarterly attestations of reserves. In fact, a top 12 accounting firm has been hired to fully audit the reserves.

Paolo Ardoino claims Tether (USDT) is mostly backed by fiat-denominated reserves, with only a small proportion of digital assets.

Growing concern over the possible loss of Tether's peg to the U.S. dollar has caused the market value of USDT to fall below $70 billion and now stands at $67.84 billion, Binance.

China tests tech that could beam solar power from space to Earth

Chinese researchers have successfully tested a full-system model of technology that could one day wirelessly transmit solar power from outer space to Earth.

A model power station at Xidian University in Shaanxi province captures sunlight high above the ground and converts it into microwave beams. It then transmits through the air to a receiver station on the ground, where it can be converted back to electricity. While the model only sends the energy 55 meters through the air, the researchers hope the technology could one day be expanded to send power from orbiting solar panels to Earth.

The promise of solar power from space is that it would eliminate the clean energy technology’s biggest drawback - not being able to operate in darkness - by putting the panels into orbit, where they can work continuously, Bloomberg.

America’s top 1% lose $1.5 trillion on stocks before bear market

Even before US stocks tumbled into a full-blown bear market this week, the country’s richest 1% were staring down huge losses.

The group’s overall wealth plunged by $701 billion last quarter, the first decline since early 2020, driven by $1.5 trillion in stock losses that were offset by gains in real estate and other assets, according to new estimates from the Federal Reserve. It’s an abrupt end to the extraordinary two-year run that added more than $11 trillion to their collective net worth.

The richest 1% owns more than half of the stocks owned by all Americans. The S&P 500 Index is down another 19% since March 31, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 has plunged an additional 24%. The two benchmarks had more modest declines of 5% and 9% in the first quarter, respectively, Bloomberg.
