Cantwell recognizes the significance of this trial in a way that most of the others do not. He sees that it is in part a battle of the system vs White people as a whole. He understands that the more he uplifts and strengthens his co-defendants, the stronger his case will be overall. Strength through Unity is something Cantwell understands, that many of the other defendants do not.
Cantwell is also playing a game where he is trying to make the jury like him and view him as credible. He knows the more time he takes with each witness, the more opportunities he has to win the jury over. He is hitting all the points and winning the arguments while being as entertaining and exciting as possible. He wants the jury to go "I liked that guy" when they go to deliberate.

Her "physical effects" were that she was supposed to undergo surgery the next week, but could not because she was in such a bad state. Someone needs to ask why she was at a rally if she needed surgery so soon.
