Vicars’ Close is believed to be the only complete medieval street left in England. Like, no other untouched are left, and this one is the last true survivor from the 14th century.

It was designed to provide accommodation for the Vicars Choral, who sang daily within the Cathedral. This centuries-old tradition continues today and is a much valued part of life at Wells Cathedral.

Shirakawa-go, Japan

This part of Japan has recently been completely free of tourists. Unique style of small local villages was declared World Cultural Heritage just in 1995.

Two reasons why Shirakawa is a hidden treasure:

№1: Нou wont find anything like that anywhere in the world. Locals developed a unique architectural style, alled gassho-zukuri, to make living in the mountains easier. All buildings (most of which are from Edo rea) sit under massive roofs to survive the heavy snowfalls. It’s a unique style even for Japan;

№2: It keeps the traditions alive and rarely gets swarmed by tourists, thanks to the location. To get to Shirakawa from Tokyo, you need to take a 2-hour-long Shinkansen ride and spend another 2 hours on a bus.

While it’s definitely hard to reach (and most tourists prefer not to go there), the visit to Shirakawa is totally worth it.

Kynance Mews

Mews — in simple terms — means a street with the country style, with small houses standing right next to each other, with garage doors on the first floor.

It’s a British-only thing, and of all streets of this kind — Kynance s probably the prettiest. Here’s why:

1. All the houses are covered with greenery, plants are hanging from balconies, windows and roofs. All of it — due to street’s past close relation to the Cornwall gardens;
2. Instead of a regular street corner it has a huge stone arch on both sides. Historical monuments from 1860s are also covered in plants;
3. It keeps the Mews tradition and didn’t turn into a touristic attraction with noisy bars or shops on the first floor. Locals keep it classic.
