COVID-19 pandemic and Infodemic
Today we explore a topic, which was brought up in our previous post —
Infodemic. What does it actually mean? Let's find out!
"
An infodemic is too much information including false or misleading information in digital and physical environments during a disease outbreak. It causes confusion and risk-taking behaviours that can harm health. It also leads to mistrust in health authorities and undermines the public health response",- @WHO.
As digitalization is growing, information spreads more rapidly and as a result we know about events happened halfway around the world almost immediately. Another side of it is that we may see the half-truth or even misinformation and harmful messages. Because of that we can make wrong decisions and harm ourselves or the closest ones.
How can we protect ourselves from such consequences? Infodemic management. It's
"the systematic use of risk- and evidence-based analysis and approaches to manage the infodemic and reduce its impact on health behaviours during health emergencies".
It includes 4 types of activities: listening to community concerns and questions, promoting understanding of risk and health expert advice, building resilience to misinformation, engaging and empowering communities to take positive action.
