A postcard published in Japan during the Meiji era. It reads: "The Big Cranes at the Mitsubishi Dockyard, Nagasaki." The cranes were actually designed by the Glasgow Electric Crane and Hoist Company and constructed by engineers from the Motherwell Bridge Company in 1909. The cranes are still in use to this day.

Shire to Shire Series: Carmarthenshire (Sir Gaerfyrddin) & Craig Gwrtheyrn

With a commanding view over the River Teifi in South West Wales sits the Rock of Vortigern (Craig Gwrtheyrn). The site was an Iron Age hill fort, placed in a strategic position over the Ystrad Tywi , though its folkloric association is tied to Late Antiquity.

Vortigern was at best a treacherous King of the Britons who allowed the Saxon warlord twins Hengist and Horsa to settle in Kent. When fleeing from St. Germanus on account of incest, oath-breaking and treason he fortified himself there, naming it 'Cair Guothergirn'. However the saint and his followers track him there, praying and fasting for three days and night till on the third night a fire from heaven descended upon them, killing Vortigern and his retinue.
Carmarthenshire is an immensely fertile area, known as the Garden of Wales and is renowned for its pork. In fact the Romans were so impressed by the ham they took the recipe back to Italy to become Parma Ham.

2021-09-03 12:59:06 There were some interesting disparities between the armies that drew up on September 3rd, chiefly amongst their cavalry. The English horse generally had larger mounts, and were very heavily armed, including with pistols which they would fire at very short range prior to charging into a unit. Scottish horsemen however had smaller horses and were less well armoured. Generally the Scots had better manoeuvrability but were inferior in close combat. The Scottish army numbered some 8-9,000 infantry, 32 guns and 3,000 horse with the English fielding 7,500 foot, 22 guns and 3,500 horse. Neither side made extensive use of their artillery due its immovability.

The night before the battle in the words of a Scots soldier was 'drakie nycht full o' wind and weit' and these adverse weather conditions hampered both armies as they tried to position against each other. The Scots commanders were unanimous in their desire to attack the weakened English army but historians debate as to what Cromwell's intentions were. Cromwell sallied out of Dunbar but some argue this was to attack at dawn and some argue he was forming a rearguard to cover his escape down to England. Between both armies flowed the Broxburn and at 4am English dragoons rode over its three crossings and drove back the Scottish Pickets, taking them by surprise and causing panic. The english launched a series of assaults across the Scottish lines, in most cases breaking through only to be thrown back by determined Scottish counterattacks. Heavy rain, thick smoke and morning fog made situational awareness for all commanders involved nigh impossible and the battle hung in the balance with reserves holding back, allowing pockets of fighting on the coastal plain to prevail.

The deciding moment of the battle came however when Cromwell's own Lord General's Regiment flanked the Scottish army crossed the Broxburn, singing Psalm 117:
O praise the Lord, all ye nations:
praise him, all ye people.
For his merciful kindness is great toward us:
and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever
This heavy cavalry formation smashed into the as yet inconclusive melee. This caused the Scots to collapse but at about 7am but many units conducted a brave fighting retreat, screened by cavalry towards Haddington. The English took some 5,000 Scottish prisoners, marching them down to Durham where many died on the way, with mass graves being unearthed in 2015, others being deported as indentured servants to English colonies. In comparison to Cromwellian war crimes in Ireland the English occupation of Edinburgh was benign and promised its citizens that no harm would come to them. The Scots leadership broke down at this point in a blame game, largely in relation to the purges of more experienced officers prior to the war, with radicals saying the defeat was punishment by God for not purging enough 'Engagers' (support for a royalist compromise' whilst some blamed the purging of these seasoned officers for the defeat. Dunbar allowed for Cromwell to, after a number of other engagements at Hieton, Inverkeithing and Worcester to occupy Scotland under English military rule.

Battle of Dunbar 1650 Following the establishment of republican rule in England under Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, Scotland declared for King Charles II. Before doing so they made him accept the authority of the Scottish Kirk and the parliament, an offer which Charles was not happy with but nonetheless signed. Upon his arrival in England Scotland began mustering an army to support their King.

The English army hurried north under Lord Fairfax who then resigned, reluctant to attack his old allies, so Cromwell assumed command and crossed the Tweed with his New Model Army. He spent much of August trying to persuade the Scottish army under Lord Leslie of Newark to meet him in open battle but the Scots instead slowly retreated, denying the English supplies and harassing them with cavalry and hostile locals. Cromwell had been supplying his army by sea from the ports of Dunbar and Musselburgh and it was at Dunbar where he was pinned by the Scottish Army. TBC

2021-08-31 15:35:28 "We have a moral responsibility to help" because of "a situation the UK and US helped cause" shrieks the urban socialite. A situation which was protested against on both sides of the pond, a situation which nobody was polled on or asked if it was the correct response. Nobody in these countries is responsible, except for the slimy politicians who decided it would be a great idea to send fighting men, at worst, to their deaths in a country which is no threat to either for 20 years, with nothing to show for it.

There is no such responsibility. Were it Tony Blair and all members of the political class whose homes were to be repurposed for the sake of "refugees", sure. Go for it, they deserve this.

No average citizen should feel "responsible" for any Afghan, I sure as hell don't.
