■ OPTICAL GROUND WIRE.


◇ Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has recently signed an agreement with Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Ltd. (HPSEBL) in Shimla (H.P.) for utilization of 500 Kms of OPGW Telecom network.

◇ Through this OPGW Network, Telecom Service providers will be able to provide uninterrupted mobile/Internet services to the people of the state of Himachal.

◇ An OPGW cable contains a tubular structure with one or more optical fibers in it, surrounded by layers of steel and aluminum wire.

◇ An optical ground wire is a type of cable that is used in overhead power lines. Such cable combines the functions of grounding and communications.

◇ The optical fiber itself is an insulator and is immune to power transmission line and lightning induction, external electrical noise and crosstalk.

■ MOVING BLACKHOLE WITHIN THE HOST GALAXY.

#Space

◇ Scientists have discovered the first moving supermassive black hole whose mass is about three million times that of our Sun.

◇ The black hole was travelling within its own galaxy, J0437+2456, which is around 228 million lightyears away from Earth.

◇ Researchers used radio antennas placed at great distances from each other to form a giant reception net for masers emitting from the moving black hole.

◇ Then, using a technique, called very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), they calculated the velocities of the 10 black holes under survey.

◇ In VLBI, a signal from an astronomical radio source, such as a quasar, is collected at multiple radio telescopes on Earth or in space.

◇ The distance between the radio telescopes is then calculated using the time difference between the arrivals of the radio signal at different telescopes.

■ OPEN RADIO ACCESS NETWORK.

#Governmentinitiative

◇ Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) Chairman has said that use of Open RAN (Radio Access Network) and software defined telecom networks will open new opportunities for Indian entities to enter into the network equipment market.

◇ Usually, radio access network (RAN), which includes base station and antennas, makes up for the majority of the network cost.

◇ Open RAN enables telecom service providers to diversify supply chains, bring in unprecedented levels of interoperability and agility, which can help reduce their capex by almost 50%.

◇ Open RAN is not a technology, but rather an ongoing shift in the mobile network architecture that allows networks to be built using subcomponents from a variety of vendors.

◇ The key concept of Open RAN is ‘opening’ the protocols and interfaces between the various subcomponents (radios, hardware and software) in the RAN. This is referred to as a disaggregated RAN.
