The juicy fruit of the kiwano is one of the few sources of moisture for native animals, although the thorns on its rind do deter some mammals. And when the kiwano ripens, it explodes, releasing many seeds.

At an altitude of 2,800 metres, a fantastic picture awaits the traveller: a turquoise lake, bright yellow rocks and twinkling blue lights. Within the volcano's caldera is the largest acid lake with huge sulphurous rocks: during the day dozens of workers haul away pieces of sulphur in baskets, and at night a blue shimmer appears around these rocks.

This is because sulphur reacts chemically when it comes into contact with oxygen and an unusual flicker appears in the air, which can be seen at night.
