I have recently been asked this question by one of my students and here is the response given by my American friend:

1. I'm well - this phrase refers to your health

2. I'm good - this phrase refers to your state of mind

e.g. Although I'm well, I can't say that I'm good (even though I haven't got problem with my health, I feel mentally sick)

e.g. 1. I can hold my breath for 3 minutes straight.
2. I have been doing my homework for 5 hours straight.
3. Real Madrid has won the European championship league for 3 years straight.
