#ConfusingWords

It sure is an eyesore to see spelling blunders in one's text/essay, or anything for that matter. As long as you want to level up your English, it's essential to produce error-free words in a sentence. With that in mind, let's find out the actual forms of some commonly misspelled words, which I call 'fect buddies'.

Affect (v.) - to produce a change in somebody/something.

Your sleeping routine affects your productivity big time.

Effect (n.) - a change that somebody/something causes in somebody/something else; a result.

The research suggests that exercising has a positive effect on cognitive ability.

Impact (n.) - the powerful effect that something has on somebody/something.

The proliferation of streaming devices has had a huge impact on our binge-watching habits.

Reflect (v.) - to show or be a sign of nature of something & of somebody's attitude or feeling.

Her novels reflect her interest in Islamic rituals.

Abyss (n.) - a very deep wide space or hole that seems to have no bottom. [formal or literary]

Gaze (v.) - look steadily at someone/something for a long time, either because you're very interested & surprised, or because you're thinking of something else.

Bring it on (exp.) - used to express confidence in facing a challenge.

I'm betting my life on it = I'm totally sure it's the case or will happen.

Food for Thought

More often than not, modern parents are simply paralyzed by the fear that they will no longer be liked or even loved by their children if they chastise them for any reason. They want their children’s friendship above all, and are willing to sacrifice respect to get it. This is not good. A child will have many friends, but only two parents, if that. And parents are more, not less, than friends.

Friends have very limited authority to correct. Every parent therefore needs to learn to tolerate the momentary anger or even hatred directed towards them by their children, after necessary corrective action has been taken, as the capacity of children to perceive or care about long-term consequences is very limited.

When talking about animals you like, the most common mistake is to use singular, but if you are talking about this animal in general, you should use plural

I like giraffe

I like giraffes/dogs/elephants

2022-08-23 13:47:46 A Common Mistake in Reported Speech:

DIRECT SPEECH: “We did well on the test. We studied a lot.

REPORTED SPEECH:

Incorrect: "They told me they did well on the test because they studied a lot."

Correct: “They told me they did well on the test because they had studied a lot.”

It's also not for the best that all human corruption is uncritically laid at society's feet. That conclusion merely displaces the problem, back in time. It explains nothing, and solves no problems. If society is corrupt, but not the individual within it, then where did the corruption originate? How is it propagated?!
