2022-06-17 15:02:48 #IELTSmyth

Some people think that in speaking it is a disaster to say ā€˜I donā€™t knowā€™, so they choose to stay silent if they canā€™t come up with an idea. However, keep in mind that IELTS checks your language skills rather than mindset or outlook. This means that you can say you donā€™t know an answer to a question, produce your predictions, and say something related to question. This is what examiners actually expect from you.

Even in real life in your native language , some questions in IELTS speaking (possibly Part 3) may be hard to answer immediately. They take a while to think about. But definitely if you are given these questions in Uzbek or Russian, you wouldnā€™t stay silent for minutes, right? Youā€™d say something. English is not an exception.

So, when an examiner asks you a hard question, donā€™t stay silent. If you donā€™t know the answer to the question, state that. Then, give your predictions and extend. Thatā€™s totally fine. This is verified.

2022-06-16 11:52:45 Even though the following two words are quite common, to my surprise many students don't know them:

Subjective (adj)

- a statement, opinion, attitude that is influenced by personal opinion and can therefore be incorrect or smth that only exists in people's mind

1) My subjective opinion is that IELTS is much better that CEFR.
2) Sometimes IELTS speaking exam is subjectively assessed.
3) The ratings were based on the subjective judgement of one person.

Objective (adj)

- opposite of subjective; an idea that is based on existing facts rather than personal judgment

1) He gave objective account of the situation
2) Judges should decide the winner objectively
3) Even though he is my close friend, my opinion about him is objective

2022-06-15 10:44:44 Don't confuse the following words:

Knowledge

-understandingĀ ofĀ informationĀ about aĀ subjectĀ that you get byĀ experienceĀ orĀ study

E.g. Her knowledgeĀ ofĀ EnglishĀ grammarĀ is very extensive.

Intelligence

-theĀ abilityĀ toĀ learn and understand

E.g. IĀ believeĀ that allĀ childrenĀ areĀ born withĀ equalĀ intelligence.

Wisdom

-theĀ abilityĀ to useĀ yourĀ knowledgeĀ andĀ experienceĀ to make goodĀ decisionsĀ andĀ judgments

E.g. Wisdom is not an exceptional quality possessed by only a handful of bearded philosophers. We all can make wise decisions given the right context

P.s. These words are defined differently in different cultures though. Coming up with the most precise definition is more challenging than one thinks.

One technique I mastered to improve my writing level to 7.5 is planning my essay. Previously, I saw no need for this and always ended up writing muddled essay as a result. However, meticulously planned essay can definitely guarantee high score in Coherence and Cohesion. Make sure you plan all your ideas before putting them onto paper.

Above is an example of good planning. Use it to help you in your preparation
