Why study in Canada?

Studying in Canada
– by Adnan Kamal

Canada is now home to nearly 600,000 international students. This is triple the amount since 10 years ago. Canada has risen to the forefront of providing education to the students of the world.

Canada now ranks as the fourth host-leading country for international students according to the ICEF.

Canada maintains its position as a global hotspot for education due to the quality of knowledge imparted and shared by these universities and colleges in Canada. Canada is also well-known as a welcoming and open society, especially towards newcomers. Lastly, Canada provides a comprehensive study-work-immigrate package to international students, which provides them with an opportunity to gain Canadian Citizenship.

If Canada appeals to you, or Canada is your destination for undergraduate or future studies, then there are a few important things we can go over before you finalise Canada as your destination for study abroad.

Quality of Life and Experiences: Top 5 cities out of a 100 that are ideal for student life and support a student centered culture are all in Canada. Canada is also among the top nations when it comes to quality of life and safety. The country is surrounded by oceans on three sides, has a surplus of scenic mountains, lakes and reserve parks. Some notable ones can be seen below:

* Banff
* Niagara Falls (Way more beautiful when seen from Canada)
* Gros Morne National Park
* Jasper National Park
* Mont-Tremblant

Canada has two official languages; English & French. This bilingual nature of the country opens you up to new cultures, languages, opportunities. Learning French as a second language will not only add skills to your persona but also open up doors in your career.

Safety: As an International student it is understandable to hold a certain fear as to the unknown and unexpected as you are going to be in a new country away from home and family. Many parents would share the same fear, however Canada is one of the most peaceful nations and as of 2016 was ranking 8th out of all other countries. Canada also has no tolerance for discrimination irrespective of the individuals circumstance and has laws in place to protect and serve every individual in their country.

Quality Education: Canadian Universities and College diplomas are globally recognised and one of the major reasons that many international students are flocking to Canada is because of the Quality of Education it offers. Canada has 11 universities that are ranked in the top 250 universities in the world; hence making it an appealing option for studies abroad.

The most elementary question you will have to answer after finalising Canada is; What is that you wish to study? Is this for a Bachelors program, a certificate program, or a post-graduate program.

You will need to start with your level of education. This will make it easier for you to plan your next degree. What is it that you wish to study? This is the same as asking; What do you wish to be in the future? Are there any interests you would like to pursue?

With this food for thought, the next step after ascertaining the answers to the previous questions would be to shortlist universities and colleges that are suitable to your choice of program or interest of study, keeping in mind the financial quotient of studying abroad.

The internet will be your wise old friend for the research you will need to do on these universities. You can find everything on the internet, accredited stories by actual students of the university. You can learn about the student life, potential job prospects for the future, admission costs and requirements, deadlines to apply etc. Look for everything poss[...]

Alberta Resumes Draw

Finally, some good news coming out of Alberta for their Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program.

Alberta Express Entry has been a favorite program for most Canadian Immigration aspirants who have been disheartened by rising CRS scores, since AINP issues invitations for CRS scores as low as 300.

Under this program, Alberta would pick profiles from the Express Entry pool of eligible candidates who had their primary work experience in occupation which was seen as priority and was expected to support the province’s economic and diversification policies.

Invited candidates can then continue their nomination application on the newly launched portal and successful applicants would be nominated by the province and would be awarded valuable 600 points to their Express Entry CRS score. These candidates would then receive federal invitations and could proceed with their application for permanent residency.

So, it was quite disappointing to note that Alberta did not conduct any draws at all since June 17,2020. They had also announced that they will not be processing any nomination applications from candidates who currently do not live and work in Alberta.
https://secureservercdn.net/166.62.112.219/ggy.808.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/top-photo-flags.jpg
Out of their 2020 allocation of 6250 nominations, Alberta issued only 4000 nominations, further exhibiting their resolve of tightening the immigration program and thereby providing some relief to the local job market. This way they wanted to ensure that there was less pressure on the local job market, which has already been reeling under heavy job losses and the current unemployment in Alberta hovering in the 7-9% mark.

Alberta had also listed several more occupations in the ineligible for LMIA list, in order to support the availability of local employment opportunities.

Now coming to the good news – Alberta has resumed its draws for their AINP – Express Entry stream and issued 50 invitations to eligible candidates from the Express Entry pool. The lowest CRS score of the candidates who were invited for this draw is 406.

As of now there is no change in their requirement of eligible candidates to be living and working in Alberta, and therefore we can assume that these 50 invitations have gone out to candidates who are currently residing in Alberta.

The allocation for the year 2021 has not been announced and we can expect that this quota is similar to the number allotted for the year 2020, which was 6250.

Now it is to be seen, if they will actually go ahead and use their entire allotment or pull back on their nomination program as they did in 2020.

Regardless of what they do later in the year, in the short term, it is a relief for a lot of candidates who live in Alberta and were eagerly waiting for them to start the process again.

Who should handle my Immigration application?

This article will talk about how to pick an immigration consultant, with factors you should keep in mind when you are selecting someone to work with.

* One of the most important factors is their qualification. This includes education and experience, as well as certifications. When it comes to Canadian Immigration, make sure you are dealing with a licensed RCIC or Canadian lawyer. You should also check what licenses or certifications your candidate has to make sure that they are qualified to deal with whatever matter it is that has brought you in contact with them.
* It’s important to make sure you select an immigration consultant who is not only qualified but, knowledgeable and available. The individual should be able to answer all your questions, about what can happen if your spouse or fiancée doesn’t receive the visa they are seeking. The immigration consultant should also be able to explain the process in simple terms that everyone can understand. They should also be willing to guide you through any issues that come up during your application, including answering all of the questions you might have about them that are specific to you.
* Allowing your advisor to highlight what they have done in the past is also a good practice. Their track record, reviews and credibility in the market can be a good indicator.
* When it comes to fees, you are looking for someone who is reasonable when it comes to what they charge for their services when compared against other options available in your area. The credibility of the consultant also plays a role in this case.
* Immigration law and programs are constantly being updated, therefore it is important to engage a consultant who is on top of the latest happenings in the field.
* Ghost consultants are individuals who take advantage of immigrants who may be unaware of the process. Often in dealing with ghost consultants, one often runs into the possibility of being fed incorrect information and false hopes, with primary intent to extract initial application fee (non-refundable), and keep the candidate indefinitely waiting for something they never qualified for in the first place.

Canada is rolling out a brand new plan for workers and students.

Today, 14th April – Marco Mendicino the Immigration Minister of Canada, announced new pathways to permanent residence for over 90,000 essential workers and international graduates.
These special public policies will grant permanent status to temporary workers and international graduates who are already in Canada and who possess the relevant skills and experience.

To be eligible, workers must have at least 1 year of Canadian work experience in a health-care profession or another pre-approved essential occupation. International graduates must have completed an eligible Canadian post-secondary program within the last 4 years and no earlier than January 2017.

Effective May 6, 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will begin accepting applications under the following 3 streams:

* 20,000 applications for temporary workers in health care
* 30,000 applications for temporary workers in other selected essential occupations
* 40,000 applications for international students who graduated from a Canadian institution

In addition to the above 3 streams – To promote Canada’s official languages, 3 additional streams with no intake caps have also been launched for French-speaking or bilingual candidates. Communities across Canada benefit from French-speaking and bilingual newcomers, and this pathway will contribute to the vitality of these Francophone minority communities.

The streams will remain open until November 5, 2021, or until they have reached their limit. Up to 90,000 new permanent residents will be admitted under these 3 streams.
Graduates and workers must have proficiency in either English or French and must meet general admissibility requirements; and be present, authorized to work, and working in Canada at the time of their application to qualify. They also must intend to reside in any Canadian province other than Quebec.
Applicants are required to be physically present in Canada at the time of the application and at the time the application is approved on legal status.

“These new policies will help those with a temporary status to plan their future in Canada, play a key role in our economic recovery and help us build back better,” Mendicino said in a media release. “Our message to them is simple: your status may be temporary, but your contributions are lasting—and we want you to stay.” – states Mendicino

Canada has aimed to be proactive with regards to the conditions faced by temporary residents who have been affected by the Covid pandemic since 2020. Immigration Minister had announced late last year, that they were looking at several ways in which they can provide definitive pathways to the temporary residents so that they can become permanent in Canada.
Over the last few months, Canada has introduced many programs and options that are geared at easing out the immigration administrative hurdles faced by international students and temporary foreign workers.
Whether it was extending the period to apply for restoration or to expedite the provision of working while waiting for the work permit process: or 18month extension for PGWP; or a scoop large Express Entry draw that saw the lowest ever CRS score of 75; and now these innovative new immigration pathways.

Express Entry also has largely concentrated only on the applications in the Canadian Experience Class over the last few months. The year 2021 is still to see an all program Express Entry draw, which would have included aspirants and candidates under the FSW – Federal Skilled workers who are outside Canada.

Today’s announcement will help achieve the 2021 Immigration Levels Plan, which will see Canada welcome 401,000 new permanent residents.
