2024-04-03 13:02:22 READING EXCERPT:

In 1965, David Lewis, a physician and experienced yachtsman, set to work using his own unique philosophy: he took the yacht he had owned for many years and navigated through the islands in order to contact those men who still find their way at sea using traditional methods. He then accompanied these men, in their traditional canoes, on test voyages from which all modern instruments were banished from sight, though Lewis secretly used them to confirm the navigator’s calculations. His most famous such voyage was a return trip of around 1,000 nautical miles between two islands in midocean. Far from drifting, as proposed by Sharp, Lewis found that ancient navigators would have known which course to steer by memorizing which stars rose and set in certain positions along the horizon and this gave them fixed directions by which to steer their boats.

QUESTION:

David Lewis’s research was different because

A he observed traditional navigators at work
B he conducted test voyages using his own yacht
C he carried no modern instruments on test voyages
D he spoke the same language as the islanders he sailed with

2024-04-02 17:57:05 The table provides poll results from freshmen at a university who rated five different aspects of their courses as “very good”. Overall, commerce students consistently showed the highest satisfaction rates across all aspects measured. Economics students showed considerable variations, while law students generally showed higher satisfaction levels compared to economics students, particularly in pre-course information and tutor support.

Commerce students had the highest percentage of positive ratings across course aspects. Over 90% of students in this program rated pre-course information, teaching quality and tutor support favorably. The ratings for print resources and other miscellaneous resources were slightly lower, at 81% and 86%, respectively.

Economics students expressed ambivalence toward various aspects of their courses. The overwhelming majority found teaching support and quality “very good”, 92% and 95% respectively. However, the students were less satisfied with other aspects: only 55% rated pre-course information highly, with slightly higher percentages for print resources (59%) and other resources (62%).

In contrast, the ratings for course aspects by law students showed less variation, with the percentage of students giving positive ratings ranging from 67% for teaching quality to 80% for other resources.

2024-04-01 18:06:47 Some people think that the teenage years are the happiest times of most people’s lives. Others think that adult life brings more happiness, in spite of greater responsibilities.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Write at least 250 words.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Each stage of life has its ups and downs. Some feel that people are generally happiest as teenagers, while others believe adulthood is a happier time, even though it brings greater responsibilities. Personally, I agree with the latter point of view.

Life from the teenage perspective can seem very happy. Teenagers live with their parents, who meet all of their needs, and spend most of their day at school, surrounded by friends. They also enjoy long holidays and have plenty of opportunities to relax. In fact, groups of teens enjoying themselves are a common sight in many places. However, one of the reasons they are seen hanging around is that they often have little money and few places to go. Furthermore, at this age, our bodies and minds are still developing, so a lack of maturity can easily get them into trouble. There is also a great deal of pressure academically, with important exams to pass. Therefore, this time of life looks a lot happier on the outside than it is in reality.

For adults, everyday life is a lot less carefree. Living independently means we have to be able to afford accommodation and other expenses. There are also responsibilities associated with work, which often increase with our salary and workload. Working life also offers only a few short holidays each year. Thus, opportunities to relax are brief, so it is not surprising that adults might reminisce about their childhood years. Nevertheless, adulthood is a much longer stage of life, and with maturity comes the ability to deal with any challenges. This is also a period when most adults build their own family, home, and career. All of which brings a sense of personal satisfaction and happiness that is very different to anything experienced in our younger years.

In conclusion, happiness, like all emotions, is a temporary state. Although it is tempting to associate it with being young and carefree, in my view, it is a much more complex and deeper emotion that is closer to the contentment more often achieved in adulthood. (343)

At this rate, students stop taking IELTS and instead take Multilevel. It is much cheaper, easier, and accepted by most local unis
