Some people say it is more important to plant trees in the open spaces in towns and cities than to build more housing. To what extant do you agree or disagree?

It is a heated topic about how to balance between green area and construction in the city centres. A certain segment of society asserted that it is imperative to grow more plants than constructing a new building in large and urban areas. Whereas, I am in complete disaccord with the given ideology and the reasons for my opinion will be elucidated in the forthcoming paragraphs with the relevant illustration.

To commence with, there are numerous reasons to favour this notion. The first and foremost one is, it will create problem in people's lives as it will be difficult for them to find space for their shelter. To explicate, without space member of society cannot build a house. As a result, human beings will be homeless. For instance, as per the recent research conducted by the Indian Environment Organisation, the number of various cities of Kerala converted into green belt due to which the public started living on the roads. Hence, people were not able to satiate their fundamental necessities.

To fortify further, another major reason is that this development will have repercussion on the economy of the nation. To elaborate, as the building will not be constructed then labour and other workers will not able to do work for their survival so, it will directly affect the balance of the country. To explicate, where there is no residential area there will be no market, restaurants, banks and mall, therefore, it will be no source of earning. Consequently, it will lead to the issue of unemployment. Thereby, it is pivotal to build more housing in a metropolis than planting trees.

To conclude, owing to reasons such as people will become homeless and detrimental effect on the economy of the area, I completely disagree with those who opine that it is crucial to growing more fauna in large spaces in the towns and cities rather than to construct more homes.

Some people say it is more important to plant trees in the open spaces in towns and cities than to build more housing. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is an irrefutable fact that trees and greenery are of significant importance in urban areas. Despite the lack of housing in cities and towns, a segment of society is convinced that we should plant trees in available urban spaces rather than building housing blocks. I completely agree with this opinion. The following paragraphs will highlight my point of view along with relevant examples.

To commence with, trees play a key role in our daily life, because they buffer sound, generate oxygen and clean the air from carbon dioxide. Subsequently, people living in residential areas with greenery can have better health. Moreover, green areas are necessary for cities' ecosystems, since they attract various wildlife, for example, insects, butterflies, birds, bees. As it follows, planting trees in cities and towns can bring numerous advantages to people and the environment. On the contrary, living in concrete districts without plants may lower the quality of life.

Adding further, if governments build more houses in open spaces, this will lead to issues like congestion, development of concrete jungles. As a result, it will cause unemployment, increased crime rates. Take, for instance, Hong Kong. The residents are moving to suburban areas because the city is overcrowded. Hence, I do not support the idea of building houses in cities. Instead, the government can construct housing in rural areas.

To conclude, I personally believe that green areas facilitate the healthy development of residents both mentally and physically. Therefore, governments should give favour to planting trees rather than building more houses.

Make the most of your Listening test:

if you cannot hear the audio clearly, let a member of staff know straightaway

follow the instructions carefully; they may be different to practice or previous tests

listen for the specific information you want

try and anticipate what the speaker will say; this will require concentration

do not worry if there is a word you do not understand; you may not need to use it

if you do not know the answer to a question, attempt it but do not waste time; move quickly onto the next one

be careful with your spelling and grammar

do not panic if you think the topic is too difficult or the speaker is too fast; relax and tune in

read, write and listen at the same time

focus precisely on what you are asked to do in completion type questions

pay attention to the word limit; for example, if you are asked to complete a sentence using no more than two words, if the correct answer is ‘leather coat’, the answer ‘coat made of leather’ would be incorrect

if the question asks you to complete the note ‘in the…’ and the correct answer is ‘morning’, note that ‘in the morning’ would be incorrect; the correct answer is 'morning'

attempt all questions; there are no penalties for incorrect answers
