IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: Swimming

Can you swim?

Yes I can. I learnt at school when I was about 7 years old. Swimming lessons were compulsory at our school, like most schools I think.

Are there many places to swim near you?

Yes, there are a few public swimming pools. There is the main indoor one at a big sports complex in the center of town. There are also a couple of outdoor ones, but you can only use them in summer as it is be too cold in winter. One is a big one in a park, the other is a much smaller one.

Do you think everyone should learn to swim?

Of course, I think it's very important. Firstly, you spend much of your life on holiday by water, for example, when you go to the beach on holiday, so you won't be able to enjoy yourself with your friends if you can't swim. Also, for safety reasons it's very important. You often hear about sad accidents involving young children so it's very important!

IELTS SPEAKING PART 2:

Describe an unforgettable advertisement that you saw or heard.
You should say:
Where you saw or heard it
What kind of advertisement it was
What the contents of the advertisement were
and explain why this advertisement is so unforgettable.

EXCELLENT ANSWER

While waiting for my girlfriend to pick me up from work, I was watching advertisements on the TV in the lobby. That night I saw an advertisement that has forever stuck in my mind.

It was a commercial for Nike shoes with Michael Jordan. In it he said, “I’ve missed more than nine thousand shots in my career. I’ve lost almost three hundred games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot but missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed.” I couldn’t get that commercial out of my mind, not because I thought buying Nike shoes would make me as successful as Michael Jordan, but because of his unflinching determination and perseverance.

Life is full of challenges and difficulties that test our level of commitment. I believe having determination divides the winners from die losers. Successful people are not ones who have never failed, but those who kept trying. As simple as this may sound, it is the one ingredient that separates the winners front the losers. The one skill that winners acquire is an understanding that growth is only possible if you have the courage to change what you have been doing, if it is not achieving the result you desire. Sometimes success is learning how to fall and recognizing that from that fall you will learn to grow. And growth is what a fulfilling life is all about.

IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: Books

What kind of books do you like to read?

I mostly like to read biographies. I'm not sure why but it is interesting to read about people's real lives, especially when they have had interesting lives and have had to deal with many problems. I do read fiction as well, but I often find it difficult to get hold of a book that I really like. I also like reading about books to do with current affairs.

Do you read the same kind of books now that you read when you were a child?

Not really, no. Actually I didn't read that much when I was a child, but if I did it was mainly fiction books, such as fairy tales. Things like The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Fantasy things.

When do you think is the best time to read?

I think any time is ok, but when I read I like to concentrate, so I can't read for a short time like on a bus ride like some people do. I like to put time aside to enjoy it. So if I have some free time at the weekend I might read for a few hours. And I nearly always read before I go to bed - this really helps me to sleep.

USEFUL LANGUAGE:

deal with (ph v) - take action
fiction (n) - the type of book or story which is written about imaginary characters and events and not based on real people and facts
current affairs (n) - political news about events happening now

Using who? or what? instead of which?

Don't say: Who of the two boys is the taller?

Say: Which of the two boys is the taller?

Use the interrogative pronoun "which?" for both people and things, asks for one out of a definite number.

Note: The interrogative pronoun "what?" doesn't imply choice:

What's your telephone number?

It's also used to ask for a person's profession:

What's your father? - He's a lawyer.
