Kindness Pays!

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”

“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied “Mother has taught us never to accept payment for a kindness.” He said… “Then I thank you from my heart.”

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt; stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Years later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown he we nt in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room.

She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally, she looked, and something caught; her attention on the side as She read these words…..

“Paid in full with one glass of milk.” (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: “Thank You, GOD, that Your love has spread abroad through human hearts and hands.”

Try to speak at least more than the examiner. If you are asked a question using one sentence, respond with two or more. And never give short, uncommunicative replies, Typically, you will be asked about everyday topics, such as work, studies, sport, family and so on. So you should try answering IELTS Speaking questions before the exam. You will be surprised how simple they are! You just need to learn appropriate vocabulary and understand what answers you will give

IELTS SPEAKING: Part 2

Describe a place of entertainment (e.g. theatre, cinema, sports centre) that you would like to have where you live

You should say:

what this place would be
where it should be
who it would be for or who would use it and why you think this place of entertainment is needed

Sample 8.5 Band Response

The place of entertainment that I wish we had close to where I live is a sports centre. My ideal sports centre would have a gym, swimming pool, indoor and outdoor football pitches, courts for tennis, badminton and squash, and an all-purpose area for things like gymnastics and circuit training.
I can think of the perfect place for this facility: There’s a disused piece of land just down the road from where I live, where an old warehouse was knocked down. It’s near to the main road and the train station, so it would be easy for people to get to. There are plans to build houses on this plot of land, but I think a sports centre would be much better for local residents.
The good thing about a sports centre is that everyone can use it. There could be sports lessons and clubs for children and teenagers - things like swimming lessons and football team practice sessions. I’m sure many adults in my local area would join the gym, use the pool, and book the courts for games of tennis or badminton. The centre could even hold sports events, such as competitions, that would attract spectators as well as participants.
I think we need a good sports centre where I live because people currently have to travel to the next town if they want to find some of the facilities, activities, lessons and clubs that I’ve mentioned. I think a sports complex would give young people, in particular, something fun and productive to do in the evening and at weekends. Playing sport keeps people healthy and makes them feel happy, so I think a sports centre would brighten up my local area and improve our quality of life.

Now practise it yourself using these ideas and jot down some quick notes, speak for 10 mins and then record your answer in order to check pronunciation and work on it if you made pronuncing errors!

Practice makes perfect!
Study, Study, Study......

Academic Task 1:

The pie charts show the electricity generated in Germany and France from all sources and renewables in the year 2009.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Model Answer:

The four pie charts compare the electricity generated between Germany and France during 2009, and it is measured in billions kWh. Overall, it can be seen that conventional thermal was the main source of electricity in Germany, whereas nuclear was the main source in France.

The bulk of electricity in Germany, whose total output was 560 billion kWh, came from conventional thermal, at 59.6%. In France, the total output was lower, at 510 billion kWh, and in contrast to Germany, conventional thermal accounted for just 10.3%, with most electricity coming from nuclear power (76%). In Germany, the proportion of nuclear power generated electricity was only one fifth of the total.

Moving on to renewables, this accounted for quite similar proportions for both countries, ranging from around 14% to 17% of the total electricity generated. In detail, in Germany, most of the renewables consisted of wind and biomass, totaling around 75%, which was far higher than for hydroelectric (17.7%) and solar (6.1%). The situation was very different in France, where hydroelectric made up 80.5% of renewable electricity, with biomass, wind and solar making up the remaining 20%. Neither country used geothermal energy. (191 Words)

On time In time

Ikkalasi ham «vaqtida» deb tarjima qilinishi mumkin. Ammo «in time» iborasining «vaqtidan bir oz oldinroq», «on time» iborasining esa «ayni vaqtida», degan ma’nosi bor. Misollarda ko’ramiz:

Agar uchrashuv vaqti soat 9:00 qilib belgilangan bo’lsa:

– 8:30 da yetib kelsangiz, vaqtidan oldinroq yetib kelgan bo’lasiz – IN TIME

– uchrashuvga 8:50 da yetib kelsangiz, bir oz vaqtliroq kelgan bo’lasiz – IN TIME

– agar 8:55 da yetib kelsangiz, uchrashuvga 2 daqiqa ertaroq kelgan bo’lasiz – IN TIME

ON TIME iborasi ish-harakatning ayni kutilgan, kelishilgan vaqtning o’zida sodir bo’lishini anglatadi. Yuqoridagi uchrashuv misolida agar kishi soat 9:00 yetib kelgan bo’lsa, demak uning yetib kelishi «ON TIME» bilan ifodalanishi kerak!

«Just» so’zi har ikki ibora bilan ishlatilishi mumkin. Bu so’z faqatgina «aynan shu vaqtning o’zida» degan ma’noni anglatib, ish-harakatning o’ta aniq bo’lgan vaqtda bajarilishini ifodalaydi. Misol uchun:

Jamshid came just in time to meet Shohista- Jamshid Shohistani uchratish uchun ayni vaqtida keldi (vaqtidan bir oz oldinroq keldi, shunday vaziyatda keldi-ki, agar bir oz kech qolganida kechikkan bo’lardi)

Jamshid came just on time to meet Shohista – Jamshid Shohistani uchratish uchun ayni vaqtida keldi(u oldinroq ham kelmadi, kechikib ham qolmadi, ni uchratish uchun uchrashuv vaqtining ayni o’zida keldi)
