IELTS Speaking Part 2: An Electronic device (some good ideas)

Describe something electronic that you couldn’t live without.

You should say:

what it is
what functions it has
how you got it
and explain why it is so vital.

Here's my sample Band 8.0 answer:

I would like to tell you about my iPad which is an electronic device I absolutely couldn’t live without. First of all, I’m sure you are familiar with an iPad. It’s an Apple product. This one is a couple of generations old but still works fine.

It was expensive when I bought it, roughly 250$. I’ve had it for over 3 years and I truly couldn’t live without it. I use it for almost everything. For example, I surf the internet with it. It logs on quickly and because of all the APP functions you can access everything with just a simple click, like youtube or gmail.
Besides surfing the net, I can also check out Youtube videos and really learn a bunch of studs from the tutorials. Sure a lot of people play games with it but gaming isn’t my cup of tea.
I use it more for organizational stuff when it comes to work. For instance, I keep my contact list for clients on my iPad. Plus, I really keep my schedule updated in the calendar app for all my meetings and deadlines I must watch out for.

I especially use my iPad for taking pics and videos. I know it's a bit strange to use an iPad as a camera but it works wonders for me and I’m just used to it even though I feel it can be weird.

I bought it a couple years ago at the official Apple Store. When I first purchased it I had no idea of its features.

Now practise it yourself using these ideas and jot down some quick notes, speak for 10 mins and then record your answer to check pronunciation and work on it if you made pronuncing errors!
Don't be lazy!
Study, Study, Study......
Good luck!

IELTS Speaking Part 2: "cafe" answer

Describe a café that you have been to.

You should say

- where it is
- why you went there
- what you ate or drank
- and explain why you liked or disliked the café.

Here's my sample band 8 or 9 answer:

I’m going to describe a café that I go to maybe once a week. It’s just down the road from where I live, near the town center, so it’s really convenient for me to walk down there for a coffee or a bite to eat, and to use the wifi.
The last time I went to this local café was on Friday afternoon. I was trying to do some work at home, but I found myself getting distracted by little jobs around the house. So I decided to have a change of scenery; I put my laptop in its bag and made the short walk to the café, where I spent the next few hours getting all of my work done. With a nice cup of coffee and just the right level of background noise, I found it much easier to concentrate.
Over the course of the afternoon, I drank two cups of coffee and a glass or two of water. The café owner takes a lot of pride in making the best "flat white" coffee in the area, so that’s what I tend to drink. If I remember correctly, the second coffee that I ordered was a decaf, because I try to avoid drinking too much caffeine in the afternoon. I didn’t have anything to eat on that occasion, but I do sometimes have one of the home-made cakes that they sell.
There are a few reasons why I like going to my local café. I suppose the main reasons are the coffee, the free wifi and the friendly staff . However, on Friday I also managed to sit at my favourite table near one of the windows, and the café wasn’t very busy. So the atmosphere and noise level were just right, and I was able to focus on my work without distractions for most of the afternoon....

IELTS Speaking Part 3: "it depends"

Many students answer questions in IELTS speaking part 1, 3 by saying "it depends".

"It depends" is not a full answer. You need to say what it depends on, and why.

Example question:
Do you think it's important to find a job that you love, or is it more important to earn a good salary?

Don't say:
"It depends. Some people prefer to find a job they love, but other people want to earn a good salary." (This answer just repeats the question)

Do say:
"Personally, I'd prefer to do a job that I really enjoy; as long as I earn enough to live comfortably, the salary is less important. However, I can see the benefits of doing a job that you don't like if it pays well. With a good salary, you can probably do more enjoyable things in your free time."

The Young Girl and the Hen

A Young Girl lived on a farm with her parents. She loved to play with the farm animals.

One day, while she was playing with the Hens and their Chicks, a Hen pecked her finger and bit it.

“Oh, Papa!” the Young Girl ran to her father, crying and holding out her hand.

The Young Girl’s father asked her, “My bonny little girl! What happened?”

The Young Girl said, “Oh Papa! The Hen hurt me! I am so kind to them, yet one of them bites my fingers every time I go to play with them. They are not nice!”

The Young Girl’s father took her small hand in his own large one. “The poor Hens think you have come to harm them or their little children. So they are scared of you and bite in fear. You should he careful. First play with them from a distance.

When you become friends, then they will never bite you” .

Her father continued, “My dear girl. You should try to understand and respect each creature. Even if they are not like us, they also have feelings and fears!”

Moral: First understand people or animals and then get close to them"
