The 2022-2023 Yale-specific short answer questions and essay topics are now available to review:

admissions.yale.edu/essay-topics

Students at Yale have time to explore their academic interests before committing to one or more major fields of study. Many students either modify their original academic direction or change their minds entirely. As of this moment, what academic areas seem to fit your interests or goals most comfortably? Please indicate up to three from the list provided.

Tell us about a topic or idea that excites you and is related to one or more academic areas you selected above. Why are you drawn to it? (200 words or fewer)

What is it about Yale that has led you to apply? (125 words or fewer)

What inspires you?

Yale’s residential colleges regularly host conversations with guests representing a wide range of experiences and accomplishments. What person, past or present, would you invite to speak? What would you ask them to discuss?

You are teaching a new Yale course. What is it called?

What is something about you that is not included anywhere else in your application?

Essay topics are below:

1. Yale carries out its mission “through the free exchange of ideas in an ethical, interdependent, and diverse community.” Reflect on a time when you exchanged ideas about an important issue with someone holding an opposing view. How did the experience lead you either to change your opinion or to sharpen your reasons for holding onto it?

2. Reflect on a time when you have worked to enhance a community to which you feel connected. Why have these efforts been meaningful to you? You may define community however you like.

Voyage to Samarkand had already promised much professional fun long before it began.

Asad joined literally at the last minute, my charger was delivered to me while the train was almost moving, and our quadro's business-cupé experience was a whole different story on its own.

Nothing left from the initial plans; in such a dynamic atmosphere, the only predictable variable is unpredictability.

Nevertheless, I at least have an abstract idea of what to expect from the next few days. More than 200 scholars and honorable guests from all across the world are here in Samarkand, so the Freshman alumni are volunteering in a range of key positions from press-team to interpreters.

My job, specifically, is to guide the delegates from France, Sweden, and Japan - I have the most diverse group, btw.

Special thanks to Valera, his parents, and the whole team!

Without them, we'd have B.I.G. issues and could only dream of a cozy hotel number like the one we are in now.

Divine Spit.

This genius, omni-intelligent of a "healer" spits in your mouth once, and you will be like newly born.

I mean, probably his "Nasvay" is behind all the euphoric effect of his majesty's spit, but we will give the credit to him.

2022-05-30 10:42:59 Summer.

High School graduates still have the aftertaste of the graduation party and now are preoccupied with summer holidays.

While my bro, a 9th grade graduate, can chill for the entire season, he will work on his academic interests and chill.

Along with participating in extracurricular summer programs, he will be reading books, however cliche it sounds.

Reading a book is like investing in real-estate. As long as you get the right book/estate, you are in a slowly-but-surely growing business.

No need for a solid schedule or a measurable goal - how many pages to read daily, specific deadlines - in the beginning. Planning is important, I'd say, when and if there is already a vivid picture of what exactly you need and want to read.

I started the process with whatever I had in hand - a fairy-tale collection, a magazine, or a random novel. Bit by bit, it's been getting more clear what genre/author's style is mine and what book to read next.

The difference between a "good" book and a "bad" one for me is the first ten pages.

Asking for advice on what to read from others is also better done in later stages, I believe. Suggested books are better added on the foundation laid by you.

On Rejections

In two years of applying to the US, I got rejected by more than 20 universities. Since then, I have received dozens of rejections—MUNs, business accelerators, universities, internal Yale-NUS opportunities, you name it.

In most cases, getting rejected was a blessing.

Every rejection is a valuable indicator of several possibilities.

• You may need to improve yourself.
• The program is not for you.
• You applied at the wrong time.

Most rejections humble you, making you arrive at valuable ideas earlier than you otherwise would.

That is why, back in the day, I genuinely congratulated Rustam on his first college rejection. He might have been a bit angry at me for that. (Please let me know if that was a passive-aggressive "Thank you" ) But I am glad he experienced that early on.

As long as you learn from them, rejections are the building blocks of success.

P.S. Tune in for my tomorrow's post on the so-called "impostor syndrome" in college.
