By tuning in to our full range of emotions, we allow ourselves a deeper, richer experience in every part of our lives. We may think we can selectively block emotion, and dampen down disturbing or uncomfortable feelings, but when we repress some of our emotions, we inevitably turn down the volume of all our emotions, denying ourselves access to the whole of our nature. If on the other hand, we allow ourselves to be more comfortable with our emotions, including those we have deemed to be negative, the flow of positive feelings emerges more strongly; it is as if by permitting ourselves to feel pain, we allow for a more intense experience of joy.

By always remaining open to everything that occurs, we allow our fullest abilities to function, and in turn we can get the greatest satisfaction from our experiences. We have not raised our defenses to shut off any part of the self, so we are able to experience everything fully. Once we escape from the rut of the preconceptions of the mind, we can allow ourselves to soar. Rather than organizing our experience to suit our idea of the world, we “discover structure in experience.”

This openness is not for the faint-hearted, it requires a level of bravery on the part of the individual. We don’t need to fear any type of feeling, we need only to allow the full flow of cognition and experience. With true access to a fuller range of processing experience, each of us is more able to find the path that truly suits our authentic self—this is the fully functioning individual that we ought to become. We are always growing, and the direction in which people move—when there is freedom to move in any direction—is generally the direction they are best suited for, and that is best suited for them.

We're so self-important. So arrogant. Everybody's going to save something now. Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save the snails. And the supreme arrogance? Save the planet! Are these people kidding? Save the planet? We don't even know how to take care of ourselves; we haven't learned how to care for one another. We're goby the way, there's nothing wrong with the planet in the first place. The planet is fine. The people are fucked! Compared with the people, the planet is doin' great. It's been here over four billion years . . . The planet isn't goin' anywhere, folks. We are! We're goin' away. Pack your shit, we're goin' away. And we won't leave much of a trace. Thank God for that. Nothing left. Maybe a little Styrofoam. The planet will be here, and we'll be gone. Another failed mutation; another closed-end biological mistake.

Because all human beings must adjust to their environment, their psyche is capable of taking in a multitude of impressions from the outer world. In addition, the psyche pursues a definite aim according to its own interpretation of the world, and along the lines of an ideal behaviour pattern dating from early childhood. Although we cannot define this cosmic interpretation and this goal in precise terms, we can nevertheless describe it as an ever-present aura, which always contrasts with the feeling of personal inadequacy.

Psychological developments occur only where there is a personal goal. The construction of a goal, as we know, presupposes the capacity for change and a certain freedom of movement. The spiritual enrichment resulting from freedom of movement is not to be undervalued. When children stand up unaided for the first time, they enter an entirely new world, and in that second they somehow sense a hostile atmosphere. In their first attempts at movement, and particularly in getting to their feet and learning to walk, they experience various degrees of difficulty that may either strengthen their hope for the future or destroy it. Impressions that grown-ups might consider unimportant or commonplace may have an enormous influence on children’s psyche and entirely shape their view of the world in which they live.

Thus children who have had difficulties in locomotion construct an ideal for themselves that is permeated by power and speed. We can discover this ideal by asking them what their favourite games are, or what they would like to do when they grow up. Usually such children answer that they want to be racing drivers, engine drivers and so on – signifying clearly their desire to overcome every difficulty that hinders their freedom of movement. Their life’s goal is to reach a stage where their feeling of inferiority and their sense of handicap are replaced by perfect freedom of motion. It is clear that such a sense of handicap can easily arise in the psyche of children who have developed slowly or have suffered frequent illness. Similarly, children who have come into the world with defective vision attempt to translate the entire world into more intense visual images. Children with hearing defects show a keen interest in certain sounds that they find pleasing: in short, they become ‘musical’.

Why are people sad “That’s simple,” says the old man. “They are the prisoners of their personal history. Everyone believes that the main aim in life is to follow a plan. They never ask if that plan is theirs or if it was created by another person. They accumulate experiences, memories, things, other people’s ideas, and it is more than they can possibly cope with. And that is why they forget their dreams.

If no matter what you’re doing, you’re finding it immensely difficult to pursue your goals, ask yourself if they’re really your own goals. Are you studying because you want to study? Are you a lawyer, a doctor, a business person because it was your own choice? Do you prefer to be a writer or an artist instead? Do you want to make money to buy a house in the suburbs because it’s your idea of a perfect life or is it what society expects you to desire? Don’t forget your dreams, whatever you do, retain your objective goals and aim, making sure it's free from biases that stem from the influence of the people around you, especially your love ones.

Discard any goal or idea that was forced upon you by somebody else that isn’t aligned with your values and personality. Get to work on your own plans and then follow them instead.

An undisturbed communal social life is the first requirement for successful adaptation to the demands of the community. We can easily teach children to adapt so long as their attitude towards their environment is not a hostile one. War within the family can be eliminated only when the parents are capable of minimizing their own striving for power to such a degree that it is not a burden upon children. If, in addition, the parents understand the principles of children’s development, they can avoid the development of exaggerated ‘straight line’ character traits, in which courage becomes impudence, and independence becomes raw egotism. Similarly they will be able to avoid the exaggerated strictness that produces servile obedience. Mistakes of this sort may cause children to be shut in, afraid of telling the truth for fear of the consequences.

Pressure, in child-rearing, is a two-edged sword – it produces the semblance of adaptation. Compulsory obedience is, however, only apparent obedience. Children’s psyches reflect their general relationship to their environment. Whether all the obstacles that may conceivably be present act directly or indirectly upon them will also be reflected in their personality. Children are not usually capable of evaluating outside influences; and the adults around them either know nothing of them or cannot understand them. The pattern of the children’s difficulties, plus their reaction to the obstacles in their way, constitute their personality.
