2022-01-28 16:16:26 Recognizing the Shape of Our Wounds

How dangerous is the world? How easily could we overcome a speech, a romantic rejection, a bout of financial difficulty, a trip to another country, or a common cold? How close are we to disaster at any given time? What is the composition of our bodies?

Will our new acquaintances like or dislike us? Will they accept our assertiveness or collapse if we are a little too assertive? Will unfamiliar situations turn out to be a disaster? How tightly do we need to cling to love? Will our lover return if they are absent for an extended period of time? How tyrannical do we have to be? Can we approach a stranger who appears to be interesting? Or do you want to end an unsatisfying relationship?

Overall, do we believe the world is large, safe, and reasonable enough for us to have a legitimate shot at happiness, or do we have to settle for inauthenticity and misunderstanding?

It's not our fault (or, in some ways, anyone else's) that many of these questions are difficult to answer affirmatively. However, by entertaining them, we are at least beginning to understand the shape of our wounds and, as a result, the type of bandages that may be required.

Look again at that blue dot . That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

~ The Pale Blue Dot, Carl Sagan

It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue , was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth . I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.

~Neil Armstrong

2022-01-25 12:37:10 Preparation For Life: All children have in them something of the adult they will become.

In the development of the psyche we can see a constant preparation for a future in which the wishes of individuals appear to have been fulfilled. This is a universal human experience and all of us must go through this process. In child development there is an important phenomenon that shows very clearly the process of preparation for the future: play. Games must not be considered as the haphazard creations of parents or educators. They should be seen as educational aids and as stimuli for the child’s psyche, imagination and life skills. Every game is a preparation for the future. The manner in which children approach a game, their choice of game and the importance they place upon it, show their attitude and relationship to their environment and how they relate to their fellow human beings.

Whether they are hostile or whether they are friendly, and particularly whether they show leadership qualities, are evident in their play. In observing children at play we can see their whole attitude towards life; play is of the utmost importance to every child. But play is more than a preparation for life. Games are above all communal exercises that enable children to develop their social feeling. By watching children at play, we can determine with great certainty the extent and quality of their social feeling.

The goal of superiority, also revealed in play, betrays itself in the child’s tendency to be the leader and organizer. We can discover this tendency by watching how children push themselves forward and to what degree they prefer those games that give them an opportunity to satisfy their desire to play the leading role. There are very few games that do not incorporate at least one of these factors: preparation for life, social feeling, or the striving for dominance.
There is, however, one other factor that is present in play: the opportunity for children to express themselves. Children are more or less left to their own devices in play, and their performance is stimulated by their interaction with other children. There are a number of games that especially emphasize this creative bent. In the preparation for a future profession, those games providing the opportunity for children to exercise their creative spirit are especially important. In the life stories of many people, it is not uncommon that some who made dresses for dolls in their childhood went on to make dresses for adults in later life.

Play is indivisibly bound up with the psyche. It is, so to speak, a kind of profession and must be considered as such. Therefore it is not a trivial matter to disturb children in their play. Play should never be considered merely as a way of passing the time. With regard to the goal of preparing for the future, all children have in them something of the adult they will become. Thus in the appraisal of individuals we can reach more accurate conclusions when we have a knowledge of their childhood.

2022-01-24 07:38:41 What Happens with Our Sense Organs

Of all the tools with which children attempt to conquer the world, the sense organs play the most important part in determining their essential relationships with the world in which they live. It is through the sense organs that they construct their own cosmic picture. Above all, it is the eye that confronts the environment, since it is primarily the visual world that forces itself upon the attention of every human being and feeds them the main data in their experience. The visual picture of the world in which we live is uniquely significant in that it deals with unchanging images, in contrast with the other sense organs, the ear, the nose, the tongue and the skin, which are sensitive only to temporary stimuli. There are individuals, however, in whom the ear is the predominant organ. Here a fund of information is built up based upon acoustic data. In this case the psyche might be said to have a predominantly auditory pattern.

Less frequently we find individuals in whom motor activity is predominant. Another type is characterized by a keen interest in the stimuli of smell or taste, of which the first group, those more sensitive to smell, is at a relative disadvantage in our civilization. Then there are a number of children in whom the musculature plays the leading role. This group comes into the world characterized by great restlessness, which forces them to constant movement in childhood, and to greater activity in maturity. Such individuals are interested only in activities in which the muscles play the chief role. They exhibit their activity even during sleep, as anyone can verify by observing them restlessly tossing about in their beds. We must class ‘fidgety’ children, whose restlessness is often considered a bad thing, in this category.

In general we can say that virtually every child approaches the world with heightened interest in one particular organ or group of organs, whether these are their sense organs or their musculature. All children construct a picture of the world in which they live from the impressions that their most sensitive organ gathers from their surroundings. Consequently we can only understand human beings when we know what sense organs or groups of organs they approach the world with, because all their relationships are coloured by this fact. We can only interpret their actions and reactions if we first understand the influence their organic defects have had on their attitude to the world – on their cosmic picture – in childhood, and thus on their later development.

2022-01-22 07:54:09 The Eight Stages Cont'd (5 - 8)

From here we enter adolescence and the fifth stage of “ego-identity versus role confusion.” This is when we develop a coherent sense of who we are, through consideration of our past, present, and future. When successfully negotiated, this stage ensures a unified sense of self, but problems here can lead to an “identity crisis”—a term coined by Erikson.
During the sixth stage of “intimacy versus isolation,” between the ages of 18 and 30, we build close relationships and experience love.
The penultimate stage, “generativity versus stagnation,” from 35 to 60, sees us working on behalf of future generations, or contributing to society through cultural activities or social activism.

The final stage, “ego-integrity versus despair,” starts at the age of around 60. It occurs when people reflect on their lives, becoming either satisfied and at peace with their old age, or despairing over physical disintegration and the reality of death. Successful negotiation of this stage results in the attainment of wisdom, in our older years we achieve a sense of completeness and “personal wholeness” in direct proportion to the degree to which we successfully negotiated earlier stages.

2022-01-22 07:51:56 The Eight Stages (1 - 4)

Human development in terms of the epigenetic principle, states that every organism is born with a certain purpose and its successful development results in the fulfillment of this purpose. Anything that grows has a ground plan, and out of this the parts arise. The human personality unfolds and evolves in eight predetermined stages. This growth involves the constant interaction between heredity and environmental influences.

The first stage, which takes place during a baby’s first year, is “trust versus mistrust.” If the infant’s needs are badly or inconsistently met, feelings of mistrust develop that can recur in later relationships.
The second stage, “autonomy versus shame and doubt,” takes place from 18 months to 2 years. This is when the child learns to explore, but also for the first time must deal with feelings of shame and doubt as a result of small failures or parental reprimands. Healthy willpower develops as a result of learning to negotiate both success and failure.

Stage three, from three to six years, presents the crisis of “initiative versus guilt.” This is when children learn to act creatively and playfully, but also with purpose. As they interact with others they discover that their actions can adversely affect someone else. Severe punishments at this stage can inflict paralyzing feelings of guilt. From 6 to 12, children focus on education and learning social skills. This fourth stage is known as “industry versus inferiority,” and it provides a feeling of competence, although an over-emphasis on work can lead children mistakenly to equate self-worth with productivity.
