It is absurd to view mental well-being as a specific fixed state; good mental health is not something that is suddenly achieved at the end of a series of steps. Nor is it attained because an individual’s previously neurotic state of tension has been reduced by the satisfaction of biological drives and impulses, as psychoanalysts recommended. Neither is it cultivated by following a specific program designed to develop and preserve a state of inner impermeable homeostasis, or balance, reducing the effect of the world’s external chaos on the self, as behaviorists recommended.

Noone exists in a defective state that needs to be fixed in order to provide them with a better state, because human experience, and our minds and environment, are alive and growing. This means that life can be seen as instantaneous and ongoing; life exists in the experience of every moment.

A healthy self-concept is not a fixed identity but a fluid and changing entity, open to possibilities. Human nature embraces an authentic unprescribed, free-flowing definition of healthy human experience, with limitless possibilities. Humans are not traveling a road where the destination is to become “adjusted” or “actualized”. Indeed, the purpose of existence is not about reaching any kind of destination, because existence is less a journey toward an endpoint and more an ongoing process of growth and discovery that does not stop until we die.

Not as Your Emotions Color Them

In life you must see your emotional responses to events as a kind of disease that must be remedied. Fear will make you overestimate the enemy and act too defensively. Anger and impatience will draw you into rash actions that will cut off your options. Overconfidence, particularly as a result of success, will make you go too far. Love and affection will blind you to the treacherous maneuvers of those apparently on your side. Even the subtlest gradations of these emotions can color the way you look at events.

The only remedy is to be aware that the pull of emotion is inevitable, to notice it when it is happening, and to compensate for it. When you have success, be extra wary. When you are angry, take no action. When you are fearful, know you are going to exaggerate the dangers you face. Life demands the utmost in realism, seeing things as they are. The more you can limit or compensate for your emotional responses, the closer you will come to this ideal.

Interactions with people are the major source of emotional turmoil, but it doesn’t have to be that way. The problem is that we are continually judging people, wishing they were something that they are not. We want to change them. We want them to think and act a certain way, most often the way we think and act. And because this is not possible, because everyone is different, we are continually frustrated and upset. Instead, see other people as phenomena, as neutral as comets or plants. They simply exist. They come in all varieties, making life rich and interesting. Work with what they give you, instead of resisting and trying to change them. Make understanding people a fun game, the solving of puzzles. It is all part of the human comedy. Yes, people are irrational, but so are you. Make your acceptance of human nature as radical as possible. This will calm you down and help you observe people more dispassionately, understanding them on a deeper level. You will stop projecting your own emotions on to them. All of this will give you more balance and calmness, more mental space for thinking.

Approach in all cases by imagining that each person, no matter how twisted, has a reason for what they’ve become, a logic that makes sense to them. In their own way, they are striving for fulfillment, but irrationally. By stepping back and imagining their story from the inside, demythologized the brutes and aggressors; you cut them down to human size. They no longer elicited hatred but rather pity. You must think more like a writer in approaching the people you deal with, even the worst sorts.

Preference for familiar things is based purely on the history of exposure to it, and is not affected by a person’s expressed personal beliefs or attitudes. This holds true even when exposures take place only on the subliminal level, when subjects are completely unaware that they are being presented with a stimulus. “Preferences need no inferences,” meaning that affectionate feeling is not based on reasoned judgement. This is contrary to what most of us might imagine to be the case.

Feelings and thoughts are actually very independent of one another. Feelings not only precede thoughts during a person’s complex response to a stimulus, but are actually the most powerful determinants of a person’s attitudes and decisions contrary to what we may believe, it is not reason and logic that guide our decisions; in fact, we make fast, instinctive, emotion-based decisions before we have even had a chance to consider the choice cognitively—we make judgments without information. If this is true, it follows that our logical reasoning merely justifies and rationalizes the decisions we have already made, rather than actually serving to inform the choice in the first place.

“Affect is always present as a companion to thought, whereas the converse is not true for cognition.” We can never think about something without a feeling attached; as e.g., we do not just see “a house,” we see “a handsome house” or “a pretentious house.” Every perception we have contains some affect or feeling, and we have to be conscious of that, since this helps in making decisions, especially long-terms decision e.g. partners and in relationships, or purchasing properties.

Human beings may be divided into two types: those who know more than average about their unconscious life and those who know less. In a great many cases we will also find that an individual of the second type concentrates upon a small sphere of activity, whereas individuals of the first type inhabit a much broader mental universe and have wide-ranging interests in people, things, events and ideas.

Individuals who feel pushed aside will naturally satisfy themselves with a small section of life, since they feel like strangers in a strange land and cannot see life’s problems with as much clarity as those who are playing the game of life according to the rules. They make bad team-mates. They will be less capable of understanding the finer points of life. Because of their very limited interest in living, they perceive only an insignificant segment of life’s problems. This is because they are afraid that a broader view would be synonymous with a loss of personal power.

Individuals are often unaware of their own life skills because they undervalue themselves, we will find also that many individuals are not sufficiently aware of their own shortcomings. They may consider themselves to be good people, whereas in reality they do everything out of selfishness. Conversely, individuals will consider themselves selfish in circumstances where closer analysis shows them to be very good indeed. It really does not matter what you think of yourself, or what other people think of you. The important thing is your general attitude towards society, since this determines every wish, every interest and every activity of each individual.
