Week in OSINT #2022- 18 - sector035 - Email Domain Finder

User meakaaet shared a small script that enables you to possibly find the email provider from a censored email address. This is useful when you have a censored email address, for instance from a password reset, and you don't know what the actual email is. With this tool, a list of more than 6000 email providers is beng checked for a possible match. Awesome little script, that can help you automate a lengthy manual search!

2022-05-17 14:13:14 How to do a small OSINT investigation

With an overall increase in people’s interest in OSINT either as a tool to fight disinformation, part of the reconnaissance phase of ethical hacking, or as an aid in the investigation of possible war crimes, we have come to witness a surge in videos, articles, podcasts, etc, on the topic. For most of it, the focus tends to be the tools needed to get the job done. But the job is not done with the tools, it’s done with your brain. The tools are just there to help you gather the (open source) data that you will still need to verify, analyse and, later on, turn into intelligence. This can be in the style of a report, an article, a book, or any other form of wider dissemination of your findings.

In this blog entry I will take you along a small OSINT investigation focused on the Russia – Ukraine conflict, starting from the data collection, going past the verification process, followed by the analysis of the findings, and finally the report writing of the intelligence gathered.

2022-05-17 09:07:58 Week in OSINT #2022- 18 - sector035 - Neurodiversity

Discord user 'grippingyarn' shared a link about a SANS Summit on neurodiversity. Sadly I missed the Summit itself, but found that there is a blog post about it with a lot of information and resources. It shows that within the field of cybersecurity, but also OSINT, there actually is a need for people with specific skills and talent. People that are unemployed because they are diagnosed with some form of disability, can leverage their unique skills within certain areas of expertise. It's a good lesson to look beyond these so-called 'disabilities', and focus on talent and skills.

2022-05-16 09:40:10 Week in OSINT #2022- 18 - sector035 - Python for Journalists

Over in #general-chat 'Nonso' shared a link to a project that teaches the basics of Python and the use of Jupyter Notebook. It's created by Winny de Jong and covers scraping, cleaning up and analysing data. It has over 4 hours of video, and if you need more courses on handling data in general, there is a lot more to discover on that website. Have a look at their resources and courses, and make sure to check their reading material too.

Week in OSINT #2022- 18 - sector035 - OSINT Beginners Quiz

At the end of 2020 I launched a Gmail based quiz, that was aimed at people that were curious about OSINT. After a few days of coding and testing it was ready, but took well over a week of reviewing all the questions before I was satisfied. This is only the fist one that's web-based now, and the other two will follow suit. A huge thank you to OSINT_Research, who took the time to go over all the questions and gave me valuable feedback!

2022-05-12 09:08:00 Week in OSINT #2022- 18 - sector035 - Boolean Strings Bank

For most technical people a "Boolean" value is one that is a 1 or 0, as in true or false, and within search engines it's a technique where one can use so-called 'symbolic logic' to broaden or refine a search. Within the sourcing community Boolean searches are widely known, and this site has a specific dataset of Google searches. Do you need to find someone in a specific area of expertise, but could use some examples of searches? Then have a look at this website! Thank you Nothic Eye, for sharing this one over on The OSINT Curious Discord.

2022-05-11 09:08:01 Week in OSINT #2022- 18 - sector035 - Geotagged YouTube Videos

Anne-Lynn Dudenhöfer wrote an article on the web-based tool GeoFind by Matthew Wright. She goes over the importance of such a tool, but also how to use it. A great tool, especially when one is focusing on possible footage within conflict areas. A little hint if you know this tool already, there are more interesting articles on her blog!
