2022-06-13 09:08:01 How to Set up a Raspberry Pi ADS-B Flight Tracker for OSINT Investigation
This week I finally got some time to add an ADS-B Flight Tracker to my Maritime AIS Pi to facilitate the tracking of both aircraft and sea vessels. This may seem strange to have both trackers on one Pi (bear with me I promise this won’t be all about ships) but there are actually quite a few crossovers between maritime and flight tracking.

Due to the nature of the maritime industry, vessels often employ obfuscation techniques to hide their location. When a vessel turns off its AIS or “goes dark” it can’t be seen by AIS trackers such as MarineTraffic or Vessel Finder. This lack of AIS signal poses a problem for analysts who must now rely on alternative sources to piece together the location of a ship.

2022-06-12 19:18:00 Blockchain Investigations 101: An Intro to Ethereum

Public blockchains are a wealth of information for any OSINT practitioner because cryptocurrency now intersects with so many different parts of society. The common perception is that blockchain investigations are complicated and can only be done with expensive commercial tools. While it is true that commercial tools are helpful, investigating public blockchains can be done using various open-source websites.
We will discuss what cryptocurrency assets are, how they are used, and how anyone with the requisite knowledge can use the Ethereum blockchain to view and monitor activity for the purposes of furthering an investigation. No prior blockchain investigation experience is needed to follow along. Examples will be provided so attendees can follow along and recreate what was covered during the presentation.

Week in OSINT #2022- 21 - sector035 - SOCMINT Scraping and Analysis

https://os2int.com/toolbox/scraping-social-media-data-analysing-disinformation-and-batch-scraping-from-telegram/

Laura shared a blog from OS2INT that is about basic data collection and analysis of social media platforms. It talks about Instant Data Scraper, the InVID/Weverify plugin, and a Python tool that is built to scrape Telegram messages from open groups and channels. A nice blog, with some good resources and explanation on how to gather and analyse data.

2022-06-12 09:08:01 Week in OSINT #2022- 20 - sector035 - YouTube Shorts

This weekend Cyber Detective shared a nifty trick for YouTube shorts. You probably know them by now, the short clips that popup everywhere. They are slightly different from normal videos since they don't start with the standard interface. No way to skip to a specific time frame, no settings, no subtitles. But by changing the URL slightly, it's possible to enable them all. Twitter user Demian even gave an even easier trick. Simply take the URL, and change the word 'shorts' to the letter 'v'. So this:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/yFuK68u2-hw

becomes:

https://www.youtube.com/v/yFuK68u2-hw

YouTube will rewrite the URL automatically and load the desired video in a regular player. Thanks for sharing this tip!

Week in OSINT #2022- 21 - sector035 - Geospatial Intelligence

https://usgif.org/anthology/

Dr Dude shared some free course material on geospatial intelligence over on the TOCP Discord. They all cover the basics, history, methodology and how it can be used within different disciplines, but there's one completely free course by USGIF. It teaches you the workings of a GIS, different sensors in satellite imagery, and things like artificial intelligence and data analytics. Don't expect to be a GEOINT wizard after this, but you will absolutely learn everything there is about the history and basics of this field of expertise, to give you a solid basis for further exploring, with a whopping 358MB of PowerPoint presentations and Word documents for offline study.

Week in OSINT #2022- 20 - sector035 - Cyber Hell

Link: https://www.netflix.com/nl-en/title/81354041

A tip about the documentary Cyber Hell was shared last weekend by Christina Lekati. The Korean documentary follows journalists, civilians and the police in a harrowing story of their hunt to capture the admins of Telegram groups where women and teens were abused, the so called Nth Room case (Wikipedia). By scrutinizing photos to look for clues, among other investigive steps, they manage to identify victims and ultimately go after the perpetrators. Not an average 'OSINT story', but it's a good example of criminal activity on Telegram, and how such perpetrators are caught eventually.

This documentary might not be suitable for everyone, due to the nature of the crimes committed.

Week in OSINT #2022- 20 - sector035 - OSINT on Oil Rigs

Rae Baker loves investigating maritime object, and this time she looked at oil rigs and other related items. In her new blog she covers a bunch of really useful resources that can help investigate anything that might have a connection to the world of oil. From geolocation, to tracking the transport of products like crude oil. Well done, and thanks for sharing this!
