Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd (175-HK) announced it beat revenue expectations for 2022 and made “significant progress” in increasing sales of its new energy and electrified models.

Geely reported its 2022 revenue increase of 45.6% from a year ago to 148 billion yuan (US$21.49 billion), while profit jumped 8.5% to reach 5.26 billion yuan. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) were 0.505 yuan per share, down 12.41% and missed market expectations of 0.51 yuan per share.

Geely stated that the sales volume in 2022 was 1.43 million vehicles, up 8% year-of-year, including Geely brand, Lynk & Co, Zeekr and Livan. The number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) exceeds 350,000 units, up 300% year-of-year.

Lotus Technology, a division of Group Lotus, is majority-owned by Geely. Lotus will transform its products into an all-electric brand by 2027 as it launches three battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) in the next four years. The company aims to produce 150,000 units every year. According to the insiders, more than 5,000 people worldwide have ordered EVs, with a price starting at 828,000 yuan.

Geely and DRB-Hicom Bhd have signed a head of agreement (HOA) to reinforce the next phase of collaboration between them. They intend to development of the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV) in Tanjong Malim as Malaysia’s next-generation vehicle hub. AHTV will have a house research and development center that will provide carmakers with a tropicalized setting to test their vehicles.

Geely is accelerating its shift toward a more upscale product portfolio as it ramps up EVs. Analysts expect the sales rebound looks set to extend into 2023 due to more EV rollouts and fewer Covid-19 curbs. Falling battery costs are a relief, market EVs are still under greater pricing and margin pressure after China unplugged purchase subsidies at the end of 2022.

The share price of Geely is down -19.26% year-to-date (1-year), and the last price was HKD10.06

Bloomberg consensus rating has 37 Buys and 5 Holds with a 12-month target price of HKD14.82
