Literal definition: to bend the line
Meaning: to persistently and systematically pursue one's goals. The expression appeared in the 20s of the past century, when various political parties began to arise in Russia. One of the slang expressions of that period was "проводить линию партии". The phrase was adopted by the prisoners (convictions for political reasons were very common). In prison environment the phrase evolved and became more harsh: to bend the line and even to bend (people) to one's needs.
Usage example:
Если ты продолжишь гнуть свою линию, то рискуешь вляпаться в неприятности.
If you continue to obstinately stick to your guns, you risk getting into trouble.
