Apple pruning tips from a Fren.I prune all winter so I can give a lot of pro tips. There’s a lot of particular pruning techniques between varieties. I grow Sugarbee, HoneyCrisp, Cosmic Crisp, Lucy Rose, Gala, Fuji, and Granny Smith.
The big ones are pruning in winter/ during dormancy so that new growth has a full season to grow, all energy is to fruit and limb growth, and you won’t stress the tree.
A big thing to keep in mind is if your variety is a
tip-bearer or a limb-bearer. Varieties like Sugarbee, HoneyCrisp, Granny Smith, and Fujis are tip-bearers.
In the winter you want to cut half the limbs back to a 1/3 and two shoots will come off of them, and hopefully you’ll get two apples.
Limb-bearers aren’t as particular about pruning. Your main concern should be limb and foliage management so light can get to all the fruit, if you have bi-colored apples like Gala, Macintosh, etc.
