The most celebrated of
Mandu's monuments, the
Jahaz Mahal pushes the boundaries of liminality in architecture. Hovering between two artificially created bodies of water on a linear strip of land, it is a translucent culmination of a genius arrangement of open, closed, and semi-open spaces that seamlessly combine the best attributes of earth, water, light, and air available site specifically.
Believed to have been erected in the
late 15th century by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din for his fabled zenana of 15,000, it remains difficult even today to imagine a structure better suited to serve as a space for sensory delights.
The building's reflection on its adjacent waterbodies too was an ever-changing spectacle as recorded by the
Jahangirnama. As day changed to night, so the reflection of the built surfaces of the structure on the water disappeared into the dark, to be replaced by the mirror image of the un-built interior spaces illuminated by lamplight.
