Wall paintings in Bundi

"Jeypore Palace may be called the Versailles of India; Udaipur's House of State is dwarfed by the hills round it and the spread of the Pichola Lake; Jodhpur's House of strife, gray towers on red rock, is the work of giants, but the Palace of Bundi, even in broad daylight, is such a palace as men build for themselves in uneasy dreams - the work of goblins rather than of men."

-- Rudyard Kipling, 'Letters of Marque', (1899)

The statue of Fasting Siddhartha ranks not only as the finest specimen of Gandhara Art but also as one of the rarest antiquities of the earliest world.

This image shows an exceptional degree for Gandhara devices employed in the sculpture, the high relief, the undercutting of the arms and the open spaces so produced under the armpits create a stark play of light and shade. That could only have enhanced the impact of one of the greatest adherent of any religious art.

Jahangir entertaining Shah Abbas

In this allegorical painting, made at a time when Jahangir was deeply worried about Safavid incursions around Kandahar, abul hasn had the finesse to paint a frail and gaunt Shah Abbas, who appears to be painfully clutching his stomach, while Jahangir and his courtiers are pleasantly, and prosperously, plump.

This image was entirely fictitious, the two men never meeting in real life though the image of Shah Abbas may have taken into account the Indian embassy's feedback from Persia.

Sabz Burj, Delhi

The monument, counted among the earliest Mughal-era buildings, has received a new lease of life following a four-year-long conservation bid.

Located at the busy intersection of two key arterial roads -Mathura Road and Lodhi Road- the domed tomb lies to the west of Humayun's Tomb and serves as a gateway to the world heritage site.

Though it is said to be built in the 1530s, there is no record of who built the tomb and for whom.

It demonstrates Timurid architectural style synonymous with Central Asia and is double-domed like Humayun's Tomb. The tomb's outer dome is dotted with glazed tiles and displays unique geometric and interlacing patterns in different colours, and forms a prominent part of the neighbourhood's skyline.

Although "Sabz" means "green", the tomb is largely covered in turquoise blue tiles.

Used as a police station in the early 20th century.
