USS Canberra (CA-70)
The Canberra has the unique distinction of being the first US Navy vessel to be named after for a foreign warship and a foreign capital city. Originally intended to be named Pittsburgh, the Baltimore class heavy cruiser’s name was changed to Canberra after the loss of the Australian heavy cruiser, HMAS Canberra, at the battle of Savo Island on the night of 8 August 1942. Commissioned on 14 October 1943, she spent the entirety of her WWII career in the Pacific Theater. Canberra earned seven battle stars for her service during the Second World War. She was decommissioned in 1947 and then brought back into service in 1956 after being converted to a Boston class guided missile cruiser. She served in that capacity, as CAG-2, until she was decommissioned on 2 February 1970. After being struck from Naval Register on 31 July 1978, the Canberra was sold for scrap on 15 July 1980. Canberra is seen above off of Boston on 16 October 1945.

Big E Comes Home
The USS Enterprise (CV-6) suffered from a horrendous kamikaze attack while operating off of Okinawa on 14 May 1945. The evidence of the damage she received can be seen in the photo above from June of 1945, after she had returned to Puget Sound Navy Yard for repairs. Most notably, her forward elevator is missing. It was blown out of her flight deck by the force of the explosion caused by the kamikaze hitting the carrier. Crew members can be seen offloading ammunition from the stern while other Enterprise sailors are seen disembarking from the stricken carrier onto the City of Sacramento, the ferry coming alongside. Once she was finished being prepared for dry dock at Puget Sound, she would remain there until September of 1945 when her repairs were finally completed. The 14 May kamikaze attack proved to be the blow that finally knocked the Navy’s most decorated carrier out of the war.

Skyhawks on Deck
Two Douglas A-4B Skyhawks from a detachment of VSF-1 “War Eagles” are seen above preparing to launch from USS Yorktown (CV-10) in 1966. Yorktown was playing host to a dependents day cruise. This photograph was taken during the Yorktown’s time as an anti-submarine carrier, while she was designated as CVS-10. The VSF-1 detachment was assigned to CVSG-55 from 5 January 1966 until 27 July 1966, during the group’s deployment to Vietnam. Four Grumman S-2E Trackers can be seen performing a flyby off of CV-10’s port bow.
