Phabulous Phantoms

Three F-4B Phantom IIs of VF-51 “Screaming Eagles” are seen flying in formation circa 1971. At the time of this photo, VF-51 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard USS Coral Sea (CVA-43). CVW-15 deployed with the Coral Sea to Vietnam from 12 November 1971 to 17 July 1972. The jet leading the formation, BuNo 150456, is colorfully marked as Commander Carrier Attack Wing 15’s mount. This jet was later converted to an F-4N and then to a QF-4N. For there, it was downed as a target on 27 July 1989. The other two jets, BuNo 150996 and BuNo 153027, were also converted to the F-4N standard and retired in 1977 and 1983 respectively.

The Calm Before the Storm

Four of the US Navy’s interwar heavy cruisers are seen above at anchor in Mare Island Navy Yard in November of 1936. All of the cruisers are wearing the Navy’s splendid interwar overall white paint scheme. The cruiser closest to the camera is the Tuscaloosa (CA-37) of the New Orleans class. Moored on her starboard side, is the Northampton class cruiser, Chicago (CA-29). The Tuscaloosa’s sister ship, San Francisco (CA-38) is moored just forward alongside the Northampton class cruiser, Houston (CA-30). During the war, there would be 29 battle stars and two Presidential Unit Citations awarded to the four cruisers above. The Houston would be lost during the Battle of Sunda Strait on 1 March 1942, while the Chicago would be sunk at the Battle of Rennell Island on 30 January 1943. The San Francisco would end up as the second most decorated US Navy warship of the conflict, behind only the Enterprise (CV-6). The Tuscaloosa would serve admirably in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters.

30-06 round. Garand’s rifle was standardized by the US military on 9 January 1936 as the US Rifle, Caliber 30, M1. The M1 became the first standard issue semiautomatic military rifle at that point. However, M1s did not begin to reach units until early 1937. Developmental problems with the gas system created delays, but once they were solved, production picked up speed. M1 production finally caught up with the war effort in late 1942, early 1943 and by the end of the year, most units in the ETO were equipped with the rifle. American troops loved their M1s. It was widely regarded as an accurate, robust and powerful rifle. The fact that it was semiautomatic gave US troops a huge advantage over Japanese and German troops who were still armed with bolt action rifles for the most part. Once production of the M1 stopped in the 1950s, over 6 million were produced. Springfield, Winchester, Harrington & Richardson and International Harvester all made M1s.

US Military Rifles Part 6: M1 Garand

The weapon that General George S. Patton would call the greatest battle implement ever devised, started out as the brainchild of John C. Garand. Garand worked at the Springfield National Armory and received a patent in April of 1930 for the new rifle. In the gas operated system that Garand designed, gas was tapped through a port under the barrel into the gas cylinder where it drove an operating rod to the rear. This caused the bolt to rotate slightly, releasing the bolt so they then traveled back together. The spent cartridge was ejected and the action was cocked as it went. In hitting the buffer, the rod and bolt were driven forward by a spring, picked up a round from the magazine, chambered it and recocked the bolt. The rifle Garand designed made use of an 8 round en-bloc clip in an internal magazine. The clip made an audible pinging sound once it was empty and ejected. The rifle was chambered to fire the.
