I was saddened to hear of the passing of Senator John S. McCain III today at the age of 81. Senator McCain was a personal hero of mine for as long as I can remember, both because of his many years as a public servant and as a Naval Officer and Aviator. McCain retired from the Navy as a Captain in 1981 after 23 years of service. He was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1958. McCain followed his father and grandfather into naval service, both of whom made Flag Rank. McCain survived the USS Forrestal Fire on 29 July 1967 and was shot down on a bombing mission over Hanoi in October of that same year.

Sergeant Douglas D. Tompkins of Jud, North Dakota is seen above in the middle of an intense firefight on 14 July 1952. Sgt. Tompkins and his unit, the 5th Regimental Combat Team, 24th Infantry Division were taking part in an assault on Chinese held positions on the east-central front in Korea. Sgt. Tompkins is making use of his M26 Pershing’s .50 caliber M2 machine gun.

The United States Army Air Force was far from the only operator of the Consolidated B-24 Liberator during the Second World War. The United States Navy’s Liberator variant is seen above, the PB4Y-1. This particular PB4Y-1 belonged to Bombing Squadron 103 and is pictured en route to the Bay if Biscay during the summer of 1943. VB-103 began operating out of Eval, Cornwall, United Kingdom in August of 1943, with their primary mission being U-boat hunting.

A United States Army infantryman is seen above, armed with an M60 machine gun. This photo was taken on 1 June 1972, presumably in Europe during Army maneuvers or a NATO exercise. The soldier has creatively camouflaged himself using some of the surrounding flowers and plants. His M60 is mounted on an M122 tripod with the original pintle mount. That pintle was a modification of the model used on the M1919A4 and A6 machine guns. The modification consisted of the large metal platform that attached to the base of the M60 forearm and receiver.

2021-12-16 21:59:25 The Last Mooring

In this detailed painting by artist Tom Freeman, USS Arizona (BB-39), is seen being pushed into what would prove to be her final mooring at 0915 on the morning of 5 December 1941. Two days later, the Arizona would be at Quay F-7 when Japanese aircraft swarmed over Pearl Harbor during their surprise attack on the Pacific Fleet. The Arizona is still moored at Quay F-7 today.
