The attack would catch the United States forces in Hawaii totally off guard, but in the end it was not a complete victory for the Japanese. Of the eight Pacific Fleet battleships sunk or damaged, six were eventually returned to action. The other damaged and sunk US Navy vessels were also rapidly returned to service, with the exception of USS Utah. The Pacific Fleet would recover from the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor relatively quickly and take the fight to the Japanese.

Last Torpedo

In this painting by Tom Freeman, the artist depicts the moment USS Oklahoma (BB-37) begins to capsize during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Maryland (BB-46) is seen moored inside of the Oklahoma, with the West Virginia (BB-48) also beginning to sink just behind. The bridge and masts of the Tennessee (BB-43) can be seen moored next to the West Virginia.
Today marks the 77th anniversary of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The United States suffered 2335 men killed with another 1143 wounded. The Japanese lost 64 aviators and 29 aircraft along with one sailor captured. There were also 68 civilians killed and 35 wounded.

Trouble on the Flight Deck

An SB2C-5 Helldiver of VA-34 is flipped around in spectacular fashion by the crash barrier onboard USS Kearsarge (CV-33) circa 1948. The Carrier was conducting flight operations in the Atlantic at the time.

Scat XXVII

Colonel Robin Olds stands in front of his Vietnam War mount, the F-4C Phantom serial number 64-0829, better known as Scat XXVII. The jet was assigned to the 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron “Satan’s Angels”, 8th Tactical Fighter Wing our of Ubon RTAFB in Thailand. The 433rd TFS emblem is on the nose of Olds’ F-4, just above his name, the name of his WSO, 1st Lieutenant Stephen Lafferty and the jet’s crew chief, Staff Sergeant Jarman. Two red stars signifying MiG kills made by Olds can be seen the the Phantom’s port splitter plate. Those MiG kills were made on 20 May 1967, when Olds and his WSO at the time, 1st Lieutenant Stephen Crocker shot down two VPAF MiG-17s
