The first Shermans to roll off of American production lines were M4A1s, with Lima Locomotive Works completing the initial examples in February of 1942. The first production batch differed from later models by retaining the hull mounted, fixed .30 caliber machine guns of the T6 prototype. The fixed machine guns proved to be of little use and were quickly removed and their holes plugged. The M4A1 differed from the M4 by having a cast hull instead of a welded hull. As production continued, improvements were made to the M4A1.

The South Dakota class battleships, USS South Dakota (BB-57) and USS Alabama (BB-60), are seen above framed by the 14 inch rifles of HMS King George V. The two American battleships were partaking a joint operation with the Royal Navy, Operation Governor, a diversion aimed at northern Norway in July of 1943. The intent of the operation was draw German attention away from the Allied thrust toward Sicily and to lure the Tirpitz out of hiding in Norway.

The United States lost another great public servant today with the passing of George H.W. Bush at the age of 94. Bush served as a naval aviator during the Second World War, flying TBM Avengers. The future president was shot down on a combat mission over Chichijima and would go on to earn a Distinguished Service Cross and three Air Medals. He also received a Presidential Unit Citation along with the rest of the crew of his carrier, USS San Jacinto (CVL-30). Bush would then pursue a career in politics after the war and served as the US ambassador to China, director of the CIA and as Vice President of the United States under Ronald Reagan for two terms. Bush was then elected as the 41st President of the United States and served one term. Bush’s presidency was highlighted by his excellent leadership and statesmanship during Operation Desert Shield and Storm. George Herbert Walker Bush will be fondly remembered for his years of humble public service.

Four Lockheed F-80C Shooting Stars of the 120th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 140th Fighter Wing, Colorado ANG sit on the ramp at Buckley Field sometime in the 1950s. The Colorado ANG operated the F-80C from 1953 to 1957, when it was replaced by the F-86E Sabre.

An SB2C-5 Helldiver of VA-34 is flipped around in spectacular fashion by the crash barrier onboard USS Kearsarge (CV-33) circa 1948. The Carrier was conducting flight operations in the Atlantic at the time.
