Charles Michel's statement to the press following the trilateral meeting with Pashinyan and Aliyev As agreed during our last meeting in May, today I received President of Azerbaijan Aliyev and Prime Minister of Armenia Pashinyan. It was our fourth discussion in this format. Our discussions focussed on the latest developments in the South Caucasus and relations between the EU and both countries. Our exchange of views was open and productive, and I would like to thank both leaders for that.
Today we agreed to intensify substantive work to promote the peace treaty regulating interstate relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and instructed the Foreign Ministers to meet within a month to work out the draft texts.
We also discussed in detail humanitarian issues, including demining, prisoners and the fate of missing persons. Chairman Michel stressed the importance of further release of Armenian prisoners for Azerbaijan. The EU will continue to deal with these issues.
We have reviewed progress on all issues related to border delimitation and how best to ensure a stable situation. We agreed that the next meeting of the border commissions will be held in Brussels in November.
We have familiarised ourselves with the discussion of the conditions for unlocking transport messages. In all these discussions, I would like to emphasise that it is important to prepare people on both sides for long-term sustainable peace. The exchange of public statements is crucial in this matter - in such a delicate situation, every word spoken in public is obviously listened to by the other party and weighed. The EU is ready to continue to strengthen its support for long-term sustainable peace. The EU will also continue to insist on accelerating economic development for the benefit of both countries and their populations. We agreed to meet again in this format by the end of November.
